Flights from Asia to Southeast Asia: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travellers who flew the route from Asia to Southeast Asia
LindaFlew with VietJet Air-Jul 2026
Upgrade to skyboss. Worth the extra dollars for luggage, boarding plane and exiting plane with private shuttle. Luggage came off plane first
JackFlew with Air Canada-Aug 2026
Allow plenty of time to transfer between flights. Lengthy queues for security to move between arrivals and departures. They don't like nail clippers for some reason. And long distances to walk between gates. ... Plenty of food and shopping. ... If you have access, the Cathay Pacific lounges are worth a visit.
AndrewFlew with STARLUX Airlines-Jun 2026
Pack as much as possible in your checked luggage, The airline struggled to get all the carry-ons to fit. 1 Backpack and 1 small personal bag should be all you need for onboard.
SumaiyaFlew with Thai Airways-Aug 2026
TG has a good boarding, but check out the bigger flight during the day rather than the red-eye flight at night.
CatalinFlew with Scoot-Jul 2026
Buy your food and water in advance and bring something to do for 6 hours
JanFlew with VietJet Air-Jul 2026
Be in the airport in good time before your trip. 2 hours at least

Be prepared for late arrival as SQ835 depart during heavy congestion timing

Check the final seat assigned to you at the counter. The ground staff — I’m sure rental — did not even bother to let me know that she switched me from my paid seat to a different location.
ChristineFlew with EVA Air-Apr 2026
Be sure you pay attention when they announce which baggage claim you need to go to as this is announced just once after landing. It's a long walk down several hallways to that area with few signs saying Baggage. Try to fill out the Thai digital visa app in advance of your flight since you can't rely on WiFi and it's not fun to try to fill that out on your phone while moving your carryons through the visa line. After visa you can pick up your bags. They took my bag and several others off the carousel without telling those of us waiting so look for a bunch of bags grouped off to the side. You can meet your cab in front of Gate 3. Near that gate is where cab companies post names of riders who have scheduled pickups so go up to them if you see your name. They'll then call your driver who will pull up to the island outside Gate 3.
JoshFlew with AirAsia-Apr 2026
Figure out how to pre-order food and drink if you’re seated in the rear of the plane if you want to eat or drink something to start warm on such a short flight.
WalterFlew with Vietnam Airlines-Apr 2026
The flight did not have built in screens and did not have power taps to charge devices, so be prepared. It did have wifi.
Verified travelerFlew with Singapore Airlines-Mar 2026
Always take pictures of your baggage and list of items packed because if lost or delayed, you could be in for lot of anxiety.

The check in process is pretty efficient but if you get stuck behind a family with lots of luggage, it will slow you down. It’s best to try and get there early. And even if you have to stand in line a bit before check in starts, you will be through it quickly. My last trip took me 15 minutes from check in to boarding gate. They move very quickly there.
SuzanneFlew with Vietnam Airlines-Jan 2026
Get to the airport early to save any stress even though it’s a internal domestic flight, give yourself time, especially if you’re a tourist traveller and you don’t speak the language here give yourself time.
puraviFlew with Bangkok Airways-Jan 2026
Krabi is a small but very efficient airport. Check in kiosks are readily available. Bag drop had a line but it moved quickly
JackFlew with Cebgo-Feb 2026
Allow plenty of time to get to the terminal. Then add some extra time! Check in, security and boarding were all fairly efficient.
VirendraFlew with Thai Airways-Jan 2026
Book your seats in advance Make arrangements for your entertainment as well as battery packs
JackFlew with Philippine Airlines-Feb 2026
MNL can be a bit daunting. Allow plenty of time to get there and to go through the ticketing and security steps. Changing terminals might best be done by hiring a Grab (aka Lyft). ... DGT is small. Steps to board and de-board the plane. The cheapest transportation into town is via the tricycles *outside* the airport, on the main road. USD $4 vs $25-90 for a taxi from the terminal entrance.
SyafiqahFlew with Singapore Airlines-Dec 2025
Take Scoot or SQ if flying to Bali. KLM tends to be full flight and their seats are narrow. their layout is 3-4-3 whilst SQ is 3-3-3. Opt for comfort always, coming from a person who goes to Bali
JackFlew with Cebu Pacific-Feb 2026
Be prepared to board and de-board via steps, not a jetway. Check in via the app to save time.
Verified travelerFlew with Cathay Pacific-Feb 2026
HKG airport is quite big. Be aware of the amount of time to walk to your boarding gate.

Go to the airports early if they have time cause both Hong Kong and Singapore Int’l Airports have wonderful/spacious shopping arcades where you can roam/window-shop/shop around, and enjoy a vast variety of Asian and western cuisines!
BEAST1968Flew with Vietravel Airlines-May 2025
Make sure the hotel you’re staying at has a shuttle to pick you up from airport. Also be prepared for changes in boarding times. It could mess with your plans. Phu Quoc is beautiful, go visit
FreddieFlew with Cebu Pacific-May 2025
If you land on T3, you don't have to change airports as Cebu Pacific fleet of planes stayed on the same airport. Just pick up your luggage and check-in at the counter desk.
AileenFlew with Philippine Airlines-Mar 2025

Get to your gates early, to make sure you are understanding what is being said sometimes the translations are not clear. Not their faults I’m in their country, I should learn more Thai :)
Verified travelerFlew with China Airlines-Feb 2025
If KL is your final destination, I like mid afternoon or late evening arrivals to avoid heavy traffic getting into the city.
Verified travelerFlew with EVA Air-Feb 2025
From a transfer journey from Same airline, you need to countercheck your boarding gates once you step out of the plane. The final boarding gates are usually printed and posted on the entrance towards boarding lobby. You can also ask an officer to confirm the boarding gate numbers. One should also be aware that the boarding gates are downstairs so you should go down to the boarding gates an hr before your flight.
KFlew with China Airlines-Feb 2025
Make sure you are on time to the gate it usually leaves on time
MIAFlew with Batik Air-Feb 2025
I wouldn’t recommend Batik Air based on my experience. If you’re flying from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru, I suggest choosing another airline for better service and reliability. Also, always arrive at the gate early, as some airlines might refuse boarding even when there’s still time before departure.
Kent ThienFlew with Korean Air-Feb 2025
You have to prepare for the waiting time for immigration to Vietnam, it takes 3 hrs to go thru and it is easy to get mad of it
HOUAFlew with AirAsia-Dec 2024
Be careful, get a flight way early for your connection flight. I noticed a lot of delay in my day traveling back from Langkawi

Be sure to check-in on line more than 4 hours before and arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure.

Be there early LONG LINES. If you want to experience the JEWEL At Singapore make sure u have a 6hr min layover. I suggest you get a locker for luggage. You do have to leave the airport and go thru immigration on your way out and back in. The lines are long.
AndrewFlew with Firefly-Oct 2024
Short hop, so no need to prepare too much. They provide water, some snacks on board the flight. Not much space for on board baggage, so bring as little as you need on board.
MarkFlew with AirAsia-Nov 2024
Make sure if you’ve traveled else where you my need to up your luggage from the minimum I did it’s cheaper in advance.
HFlew with Singapore Airlines-Sept 2024
Customs and health declarations forms must be filled up. No visa countries can use the automated gates
SohanFlew with Cebu Pacific-Nov 2024
Eat before going to the airport. Not many options at T3 in NAIA
Rocky AnthonyFlew with Cebu Pacific-Oct 2024
go early even when your flight will be delayed
PaulFlew with Cathay Pacific-Nov 2024
CX Flight number but the carrier is LCC Hong Kong Express which means no meal and no drinks at all without paying. Not even water. So keep your credit card handy so you can buy a drink if you get thirsty. Seating is LCC cramped and basic. No IFE. Gate was the furthest possible gate in the satellite terminal at HKIA so allow time to walk there.
Verified travelerFlew with Philippine Airlines-Oct 2024
Make sure you have a ride out of the airport as NAIA whatever terminal is such a hassle, when it comes to public transportation
TomFlew with Asiana Airlines-Jul 2024
We spent our long layover in the transit hotel in terminal 1 of Incheon Airport. The room was small, but was also very clean and well kept. I'd highly recommend this hotel if you have a long layover. The price wasn't bad at all.
Verified travelerFlew with Thai AirAsia-Jul 2024
Low cost airline have sometime what maight appear awkward travel times however choose well and you will infact gain time in you destination.. DMK is still totally fine and you get much cheaper flight choices
Verified travelerFlew with VietJet Air-Jun 2024
Remember to put your middle name on visas/boarding passes, because details between those and passports have to match exactly.
TananyaFlew with Malaysia Airlines-Jul 2024
Malaysian Airlines is a good option. They don't have a screen but you can connect to onboard wifi and watch onboard entertainment, movies, and music on your smartphone or tablet. Bring your headphones. Some people didn't put on headphones and disturbed others with the sound from their phones.
AndyFlew with Cebu Pacific-Jul 2024
It’s a night flight, if you do want food buy it before also arrives 2am I stayed in the airport until about 6am no point paying and booking a room at that time as you have to go through immigration etc
JeffFlew with Cathay Pacific-Jun 2024
signage could be better in locating transfer departure gate when you are coming off of a transiting flight. Airport has lots of amenities
JanFlew with AirAsia-Jun 2024
There is little food once you're past the emigration counter. If you want to eat, do so in the main airport hall.

Leaving Vietnam through customs was longer than we thought based on how short the line was, so give yourself plenty of time. Once on the ground in Cambodia, use the Grab app to book a ride from the airport to Siem Reap. A tuk tuk is cheaper but after more than an hour on that hard seat you’ll wish you’d splurged.

Airports are separate. Theres a free airport bus that can transfer you to the other terminal but the luggage itself you have to bring with you, it doesnt get transferred directly. Download the GRAB app (its like UBER) if you decide to take another form of transportation. Regular taxis will charge you ridiculous amount if youre not careful. GRAB is better.
TesfayeFlew with EVA Air-Feb 2024
Better to have a longer transit time. Preferably 3hours or more. it's easy to get lost inside Bangkok airport
Verified travelerFlew with Philippines AirAsia-Jan 2024
If you fly with budget airline make sure you chack your bag if there is any extra weight or buy extra weight online during check-in cause at the airport is triple also if you think you will eat on the plane buy your food online you will save a bit and you will have option to choose your meal
Andre Johan FrederikFlew with Philippines AirAsia-Feb 2024
Well in Panglao Airport, if you are entitled for premium flex check in counter, there is no line for premium flex check in lane as they closed that lane. You have to fall in line at the regular lane, though it is fast. Senior or special lane counters are very slow
WongFlew with AirAsia-Jan 2024
Shuvanabhumi Airport is the most convenient , reach airport by ARL without walking too much. Whereas Don Mueang airport need to walk far from Red Line station . For international flight, you need to walk pass domestic terminal to the international departure hall.

No boarding bridge this time — we walked out to a bus and climbed the stairs up to the aircraft. Not the most convenient, but we got lucky with clear, sunny weather, so it actually felt kind of nice to get some fresh air before boarding. No entertainment screens on board, which is pretty standard for a budget carrier, but I appreciated that each seat had two types of USB ports with fast charging — a small thing, but it kept my devices topped up for the whole flight. The cabin crew were the highlight. Genuinely warm, attentive, and professional throughout, which made a big difference on a longer short-haul flight like this. Overall, a comfortable four-hour flight for the price. No frills, but everything worked, and the crew's service made it feel better than a typical no-frills experience. **Pros: Friendly, professional crew; fast-charging USB ports; comfortable seating **Cons: No boarding bridge (bus + stairs); no in-flight entertainment

Flight delayed 3 HR 45 min, but prior notification given. However, plans had already affected.

They used the ATR 72-500 for the route and I love it.

Delayed 7 hours plus. Given $15 worth of meal at Subway but it was actually we can only choose 1 set meal instead of $15 of anything. The staff at subway weren’t happy to serve huge group of us. No detailed explanation given by the airline and we just have to keep looking for information at the departure tv screen.

Was all very easy, from buying the ticket online to walking stratup to the check-in desk, helpful and friendly checkin staff, punctual take off, good standard of aircraft, luggage was waiting by the time I had cleared immigration. Thumbs up all round.

No frills, basic flight in a puddle jumper. I wasn’t expecting refreshments nor entertainment. Everything was efficient, and everyone was pleasant.

The only problem was that I bought ticket on a third party app but I have to pay extra luggage cost, because of in their system different from my bought ticket. Every other was perfect

I don’t like the sour face of the check in staff at Penang international airport, front desk service provider should be more friendly n smiles always 😊

It was delayed for more than 1 hour due to LIMA when many planes landed & took-off at the same time. It could ve been better if the pilot or crew informed us every few minutes so that we know what’s going on.

The crews were very professional and courteous. Pleasant flight and thank you!

Surprised that the safety briefing was only conducted in Malay language and no English despite there are foreigners on board. MH should take safety more seriously.

Comfortable seats in economy, managed a few hours sleep in an o night flight but the food was terrible. Surprising as Malaysia airlines has been good in the past. Service was mediocre this time too.

AC not working, just slowly blowing room temperature air. Long taxi time does not help as well. Sweating all over the whole trip.

My first course flight (Aor-Kul) was cancelled in the morning, and they asked me to board the night flight hence I need to transit overnight for the 2nd flight (Kul-Myy) that supposed to be on the same day. The overnight stay was not provided, (I'm traveling with my spouse, a daughter (5 y.o.) and an infant (2 months old). Hence I booked Sama Sama Hotel at my own expense (fortunately using my enrich miles points). Other than this issue, all services is good.

I enjoy traveling with Malaysia Airlines. The Asian food they serve is pretty good and the red wine was also good. They did run out of beer and only did a couple of water rounds during the flight but the staff were very friendly.

Prompt and efficient boarding. New MH-awards streaming worked first time on my personal device.

On-time & very well priced. All you need on a short flight.

The flight is awful, food isn’t very tasty or good, entertainment sucks

Personable, friendly service. Crew interactions always naturally pleasant and polite. The crew really enjoy their job and interactions with one another. Public Addresses are all smooth, clear and unambiguous - this instils confidence. Landing was butter-smooth in what seemed to be challenging and turbulent conditions - Kudos to the flight crew. Boarding and airport experience were good also.

Good value for money. Food was below expectations but acceptable.

Check in was seamless, and easy, with friendly understanding staff and helpful Flight took off early - was good experience Meal was sub standard with only 4 pieces of chicken and container full of rice

Flight was booked with a hacked credit card and flyer was allowed to board despite airline being advised. Shameful behaviour.

I did not book or take this flight. This was a fraudulent credit card purchase using my (now cancelled) card. Air Asia was advised that this was a fraudulent booking a week before the flight. If this service was allowed AirAsia is contributing to credit fraud. If they didn’t take that seriously how serious are they about protecting your details?

They don t offer even a glass of water need to buy a drink if you are tursty they can save money and timeby cancel the food offer for 1 hr fly both fly nobody buy and try sale on boad thinkthe we can buyduty free store

AirAsia is running a bait scam by listing a lot of flights to get as much booking as possible but ending up merging the flights to fill the seat. They will change the schedule as much as they would like. Just beware when booking their flights and if you are tight on schedule. Prepare to be disappointed.

Liked the food. It’s was delicious! The cleanliness was average.. we saw dried liquid stains on the seat head in front. The flight was delayed. My experience with other airlines is that the flight crew usually announces an apology for the delay . Maybe air Asia doesn’t deem it necessary.. In summary the only positive that stood out was the food.

My flight got cancelled 7 days before departure, the the replacement flight was cancelled again and I was not notified, but found out during check in.

The seats are not great and there is no entertainment. However, it is a discount line, the people are great, check in was easy, the food options were decent and inexpensive, the flight was on time, and we arrived safely. No complaints for the cost. Would fly again!

Poor booking website other travel agents are more competent. Flights on transit does not require visa

Automated check in could have been better organised and informative

Flight was delayed from 8pm to near midnight. They made us board then sit in the cabin and wait for even longer for take-off. No compensation whatsoever - not even in a free drink or meal

We were told that flight was delayed by 20 mins, but it left close to an hour late. But they did make it up and arrived early; it's just very difficult to keep waiting when it's a late flight. Food was mediocre.

The flight has been delayed for nearly an hour, yet neither the captain nor the chief steward made an effort to explain the reason for the delay or offer any apologies to the passengers.

Instead of landing we had to go around and landed in Kuala Lumpur International Airport instead of Subang. Then we had to restart and arrived over 2.5 hrs late

Boarding was nuts. Gate change. Delayed. No communication from gate staff. They seemed lost. Rest of the flight went well

The flight delay... but bus from the airport be on time

Great. Very satisfied with a direct flight from Penang back to HK international. Stewards in the cabin were very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to fly with Air Asia in the future.

By the time the “sell “ cart came around to row 17 they were out of several items. This happened both leaving and arriving in Kuala Lumpur. Poor planning.

The flight itself was fine but we were a bit late on our flight.

My flight from PEN-KUL was re-timed for two hours or so due to some technical issue. It was not conveyed accordingly by the staff. Info only received via fellow passenger who also mentioned about the possibility of changing flight but different airport SZB. Changing flight is not easy since everyone is fighting for available seat unsystematically. Anywhere, I and my wife managed to get seat for slightly earlier flight from the retimed one. The issue should be handled more professionally and systematically.

Batik Air is racing to the bottom of the list with its consistent flight delays. Especially out of Malaysia. Shocking that they keep getting away with it without any form of punishment from the authorities. Also very inconsistent rules on cabin luggage.

Did not like that we were not informed about the 4 hour delay, crew not friendly, noone at terminals to consult with...all employees for Batrik were behind glass aftervgoing through security at the gate again. Why no agent at Gate H 10 to answer questions? And no apology. Updates would have eased anxiety. Boarding is disorderly also.

During this flight all the crew just focused on making money by selling food and drinks. There was only one washroom open. And it really smelled bad and wasn’t usable. Even to watch something onboard entertainment u have to rent headphones pathetic airline but only one with direct flight so pretty much the only option from Karachi to KL

Delayed for 3 hours, need to pay extra for drinking water.

The OD2204 KUL-LGK was delayed 40 minutes due to air-condition malfuntion, after inspection the technician give green light for the flight to go as usual but the air-condition is still not working properly, passengers complaining to the stewardess but they cannot do anything, I did tweet to @malindoair to complaint but no reply from them … hope this Batik Air is not having problem like Rayani Air and I do hope the management do respond to my complaint as well

Nasi lemak was horrible. Plain white rice, tasteless sambal, no cucumber, no kacang, no ikan bilis. And the chicken was colourless and tasteless, tasted like boiled chicken. Entertainment system didn't work at all.

2 delayed flights - hotel layover in a different country- lost baggage.

You get what you pay for. It’s functional and gets you from point A to B in good comfort. However, food options are limited and cash only, Crew is a hit and miss .. they get your attention if you reach out.

Good leg room ... air conditioning was a bit warm don't Book row 8 ... no windows
