The 10 best hotels in Toronto

Discover the top hotels in Toronto handpicked by local expert Julia Eskins.
Julia Eskins
6 December 2023

No matter how often you visit Toronto, there’s always somewhere new to explore and stay. Canada’s largest city is a fast-growing multicultural hub, with more than 150 diverse neighborhoods and 230 ethnicities contributing to its vibrant mosaic. As the city continues to expand, so does its variety of hotels. From art-filled boutique hotels in historical buildings to sleek wellness-driven retreats, there are accommodation options for every kind of traveler. Staying downtown will offer you easy access to the city’s top landmarks, but basing yourself in the east end or west end will immerse you in up-and-coming areas with locally loved restaurants, small galleries, and independent shops. Some hotels double as hangouts for residents like myself, especially if they come with a rooftop bar, celebrity chef-helmed restaurant, or award-winning spa. As a local, I’ve enjoyed my fair share of weekend staycations in my own backyard. Here are my picks for the best hotels in Toronto.

1.

Four Seasons Hotel Toronto

Address:

60 Yorkville Avenue

Price:

RM 409-4835/night

One of the best luxury hotels in the city, Four Seasons Hotel Toronto is the place to go for next-level pampering. The sleek and sophisticated 259-room property overlooks the upscale neighborhood of Yorkville, where guests can enjoy Michelin-starred restaurants and designer boutiques.
The hotel’s restaurant, Café Boulud, excels in French cuisine, while the more casual bar offers a see-and-be-seen atmosphere for cocktails and shareable plates. The pièce de résistance, however, is the Forbes Five Star-rated 30,000-square-foot spa.
I recommend booking a massage or manicure and pedicure here after enjoying the indoor pool, hot tub, and robe time. After a night in one of the signature cloud-like beds, you’ll check out feeling more relaxed than ever.

2.

1 Hotel Toronto

Address:

550 Wellington Street West

Price:

RM 250-2631/night

Steps away from the restaurants and bars of King Street West, 1 Hotel Toronto offers a prime position for those looking to wine and dine during their stay. But the hotel offers more than just a convenient address.
Nature-inspired interiors accented with local driftwood, plants, and reclaimed timber deliver a refreshing contrast from the concrete jungle outside. And a rooftop pool allows guests to cool off with skyline views in the summertime. The pet-friendly hotel’s 91 guest rooms and 21 suites feature thoughtful details like filtered water taps, yoga mats, in-room greenery, and soft cotton robes.
And with a calendar of “happenings” ranging from concerts to fitness classes, you’ll want to explore beyond the room. During my stay, I had a delicious brunch at the hotel’s zero-waste restaurant, 1 Kitchen, and dropped by a pop-up farmer’s market to pick up some Ontario produce.

3.

The Drake Hotel

Address:

1150 Queen Street West

Price:

RM 72-2824/night

You can’t talk about the best boutique hotels in Toronto without mentioning The Drake Hotel. The property has been an arts and culture hub on Queen Street West for nearly two decades and boasts a live music venue, multiple atmospheric bars, and a long-standing restaurant.
With rotating art exhibits and events, it’s as popular with travelers as it is with locals. I’ll often pop in for a cocktail at the Sky Yard rooftop bar, and I always recommend friends stay in the Modern Wing. The contemporary extension to the original 19th-century building has 32 design-forward rooms and an expertly curated collection of original art from Canadian and international artists.
Inside, you’ll find artist-designed wallpaper, terrazzo-clad showers, Malin + Goetz bath products, and locally sourced mini-bar snacks. While there’s usually a fun event happening, the neighborhood is dotted with top-rated restaurants, bars, and galleries to explore.

4.

Shangri-La Toronto

Address:

188 University Avenue

Price:

RM 70-1786/night

Located in the Entertainment District, Shangri-La Toronto is close to the shops on Queen Street West, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Financial District. Most of the 202 guestrooms offer impressive city views, ample space, and amenities for business travelers, and some suites have private terraces and bathtubs with panoramic vistas.
The health club features a 65-foot lap pool, which is rare for a Toronto hotel. I’m a big fan of the hotel’s Miraj Hammam Spa, which offers an array of Turkish-style bath rituals and body treatments. The lobby bar is a chic spot year-round, with vintage fashion installations, but it especially comes alive during the festive season.
The Four Seasons Centre, home to the National Ballet of Canada, is across the street, so Shangri-La is an excellent place to start the night with a Nutcracker-themed high tea or cocktails before the show.

5.

The Broadview Hotel

Address:

106 Broadview Avenue

Price:

RM 97-956/night

Housed in a meticulously restored 19th-century building, The Broadview Hotel is a celebrated east-end focal point. Its 58 rooms feature elevated amenities like vinyl record players and mini-bars stocked with goodies from local businesses.
Located in the quaint neighborhood of Riverside, which feel like a close-knit village in the big city, the hotel is ideal for those looking to explore a lesser-visited area. And with the downtown core only a 20-minute streetcar ride away, you’re not far from the main tourist sights. The hotel has several stellar restaurants and bars, including a bistro that serves hearty brunch.
The biggest draw, however, is its rooftop. The space offers a glass-encased dining area and a terrace for enjoying views of the Toronto skyline and the Don River while mingling with residents and travelers alike. It gets busy on weekends, so make a reservation.

6.

Hotel X Toronto by Library Hotel Collection

Address:

111 Princes' Boulevard

Price:

RM 78-1005/night

If you’re looking for a restful stay with resort-style amenities, look no further than Hotel X Toronto by Library Hotel Collection. The property on the waterfront of Lake Ontario offers 404 spacious rooms, a Guerlain spa, a rooftop swimming pool, and a 90,000-square-foot athletic center.
Among its stand-out facilities are four tennis courts, eight squash courts, a Topgolf Swing Suite, a movie screening room, and a play center for kids. Beyond the property, you’ll find stunning lakefront parks and trails (including my personal favorite, Trillium Park). While you’re a bit further away from downtown than other luxury hotels, the property’s Tesla house cars will shuttle you anywhere within a three-mile radius.
With so much to do on-site, you’ll likely spend most of your time chilling by the pool, indulging in spa treatments, and enjoying endless waterfront views.

7.

Bisha Hotel Toronto

Address:

80 Blue Jays Way

Price:

RM 233-4253/night

The brainchild of Toronto’s nightlife king, Charles Khabouth, Bisha Hotel Toronto offers Instagram-worthy rooms, bold restaurants, and edgy art-filled communal spaces. The interiors feature a mix of textures and 1970s-inspired touches like crushed velvet, geometric carpets, lacquered wood, and black marble.
And for design lovers looking to kick it up a notch, there’s an entire floor with suites designed by musician Lenny Kravitz. The hotel is in the Entertainment District, a stone’s throw away from the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, and high-end restaurants – a few of which are conveniently located in the hotel. Head to the 44th floor to enjoy sweeping views and California cuisine at Kōst.
Or try lauded chef Akira Back’s first Canadian namesake restaurant, which blends Japanese cuisine with Korean flavors. If you’re here during the summer, don’t miss the saltwater infinity pool on the rooftop – best enjoyed with a cocktail in hand.

8.

The St. Regis Toronto

Address:

325 Bay Street

Price:

RM 380-2027/night

Impeccable service, spacious suites, and a central downtown location make St. Regis Toronto one of the top-rated hotels in Toronto. The 258-key property boasts Canada’s largest collection of luxury suites – 124 to be exact – making it a great choice for groups and families celebrating special occasions.
With the building soaring 65 stories, many of its rooms have gorgeous skyline views that will entice you to get out and explore. Whether you’re in the mood for theater or a basketball game, you’ll find it within walking distance. Don’t forget to stop by Louix Louis, the hotel’s gilded French- and American-style restaurant on the 31st floor.
Cap off your meal with a slice of King’s Cake, a 13-layer chocolate affair that’s big enough to share with a group. The Astor Lounge offers an elegant environment for drinks and contemporary jazz, as well as a daily champagne sabering ritual.

9.

The Ritz-Carlton Toronto

Address:

181 Wellington Street West

Price:

RM 380-3971/night

The Ritz-Carlton Toronto is steps from the action of the annual Toronto International Film Festival and the city’s top theaters. So it’s no surprise that cinema and the dramatic arts serve as inspiration for its 258 rooms and suites.
The property showcases more than 400 pieces of original art from Canadian artists, including photography by Caitlin Cronenberg and blown-glass light fixtures by Jeff Goodman. The hotel’s well-kept secret is its spa, which houses the only Paris-based Spa myBlend location in the Americas.
I recommend booking one of their personalized facials and then spending the afternoon luxuriating in the airy 23,000-square-foot oasis complete with an aroma-infused pool. There is no shortage of places to eat in the area but head to the hotel’s restaurant, Toca, for top-notch Italian cuisine and a cheese cave where you can hand-select your perfect pairing.

10.

Fairmont Royal York Gold Experience

Address:

100 Front St West-Building A

Price:

RM 384-1674/night

As one of Canada’s grand railway hotels, Fairmont Royal York has been a Toronto landmark ever since it opened in 1929. The lobby and ballrooms still ooze old-school glamour, with sparkling chandeliers and hand-painted ceilings. Located on Front Street, near Union Station and the Financial District, the hotel is ideal for business travelers.
Staying in the Fairmont Gold rooms and suites will grant you more amenities like high-speed internet and luxury walk-in showers. My favorite perk is the exclusive access to the Fairmont Gold lounge on the 18th floor, which is great for working remotely.
The lounge serves a breakfast buffet, afternoon coffee and tea, and evening hors d’oeuvres daily, so you’ll want to pop by more than once. The hotel offers other dining experiences that recall the golden era of travel including a sophisticated library bar and the upscale French Canadian restaurant, Reign, so save time to explore its storied spaces.
