Gaya Island Resort - Kota Kinabalu - Building
1
8.9 Excellent (1,064 reviews)
RM 1,240+
Overview Reviews
When you stay at Gaya Island Resort in Gaya Island, you'll be on the beach and close to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal. Featured amenities include complimentary newspapers in the lobby, dry cleaning/laundry services, and a 24-hour front desk. A roundtrip airport shuttle is provided for a surcharge (available on request).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A fairytale location. Conveniently close to Kota airport but far enough away to feel remote. Excellent facilities, the food in the restaurants was amazing, excellent water sports available and activities both free and paid. Plus a private beach, just a 5min boat ride away. Heavenly.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved it! I went with an old friend and we had a perfect weekend. The service was fantastic, the resort was beautiful (and so was the beach), and there were just enough activities to keep us busy when we weren't reading by the pool. Looking forward to going back.
5.0 Okay
Pros: Staffs - Every staff greet when they walk by. The food - The food in Fisherman’s Cove is great. The tiger prawn (Catch of the day) is the best.
Cons: The Room - When we arrived the reception, the staff informed the Kinabalu Villa (South China sea view) we reserved three months ago was not available due to hot water issue. They should have informed us earlier before we got there because we came here to see that view. Therefore, they said they have to downgrade us to Canopy villa (no sea view) with the agreement on refunding MYR $200 to us when we check out. Facilities - We rent the hydrobike that was additional charge and we paid full price in cash immediately. While we bike it far away from the shore, the chain of the hydrobike broke suddenly because of rusted chain. We had to drag the whole bike back to the beach by swimming that wasted our time. They need to keep up the maintenance! Trust issues - First, they promised to refund MYR$200 when we check out as mentioned above. They didn’t do that! When we looked at the bill summary, they still charge us the same price pretending we still stayed in the Kinabalu Villa which we didn’t. We had to ask them then they changed it. If we didn’t double check the bill, they would have charged us without letting us know. Seriously? In addition, they still charged us for the hydrobike rental even through we have already paid it in cash. We told them about it, they doubt us and they called the beach rental place to confirm. Then, they took the charge off. Again, they would have charged us already if we didn’t ask. If you go there, make sure to ask them to give you receipts of everything you paid. The under water view - Just don’t Snorkel in the there. There is nothing much to see.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We chose to stay at the resort at the end of our trip around Sabah as a treat - it was by far our most expensive hotel of the whole holiday. Paying those prices you do of course expect very high standards and the room, general facilities and friendliness of staff definitely delivered. It's a beautiful resort and the staff were all incredibly helpful, gorgeous water and setting. Loved the free yoga and meditation too.
Cons: Sadly, we did experience a number of issues during our short stay. Most of these were down to poor communication / booking systems at the hotel - this included our yoga booking not existing when we arrived at class (despite booking 2 days earlier at reception), the hotel mis-communicating diver numbers to Borneo Dream Travel for a diving day resulting in over an hours delay to the trip, our paddleboard booking also not existing when we went to pick up our boards (despite booking over 24 hours earlier), duplicate charges on our final bill at checkout which I luckily spotted and got refunded, and finally our luggage ending up at the police station at the airport (!) as the resort put our bags on the wrong ferry - despite me confirming 3 times which boat we would be on. A very stressful end to our trip. At no point were we offered compensation or any gestures of apology for these various issues - this could have been as simple as a free drink, but nothing was forthcoming sadly. Given the high prices of the rooms, food and drink at the resort, we also felt it a real shame that the ferry journeys and water sports equipment came at an additional cost (particularly when one of the paddle boards is missing its fin making it really hard to use!). It would have been nice for these to be free of charge - as they are at many other resorts.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: If you are on the fence about booking here i would say DO IT! We stayed for only 2 nights at the end of August. It was an amazing end to our travels in Borneo. Although we didnt get fantastic weather, there was still loads to do and the staff were so so friendly, the food was amazing and our room was just outstanding. wish we could go back and do it over!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: It was a relaxing break on a beautiful island we saw lots of fish snorkelling, beautiful sea and staff couldn't do enough for you, so friendly and helpful, also very peaceful The shuttle boat was a great service and very efficient we went over to the private beach which was beautiful definitely recommend this
Cons: We were in room 916 it was up a very steep hill and lots of other villas also, which was fine for us but may not be for everyone. The food and drinks was lovely but very expensive compared to the rest of Borneo but it should be expected as in a tourist spot!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Fabulous property, great staff, beautiful pool, nice villa
Cons: Over priced boat transfers, limited choice for vegetarians and vegans, guests reserving sun lounges, rubbish in the sea
9.2 Excellent

Pros: Staff was very friendly and the location was amazing. Get a good feel of nature and encounter many different types of wildlife. Food was amazing, as you have a good selection of Malay cuisine and as well as international cuisine. Great value for money. Will definitely recommend and come back!
Cons: Sand flies! Worst than mosquitoes. I wish the hotel briefed us on these horrible bloodsuckers.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location is stunning a white sandy beach with clear blue sea and coral reef at the edge of the jungle. Loads of flora and fauna to admire. The staff on the island are fantastic so friendly and helpful. A really nice place to get away from it all. Will hope to return one day.
Cons: Our check in experience could have been better. We arrived at our agreed arrival time to be informed that we had missed the free boat transfer for the day and would have to pay for the next one two hours later or pay for a private boat.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Resort is located in the most beautiful bay surrounded by primary rain forest, absolutely stunning! We are so glad we chose this over the other resorts on the island, the location and view is unbeatable!! Each room is in an own cottage hidden in the forest. Very friendly and helpful staff! The vegetables and fish are all organic and from the resort’s own farms. The resort is also plastic free, which is really great :)
Cons: There are only two complimentary boat transfers per day, at other times you have to pay the transfer. However there is an office from the hotel at the boat terminal at Kota Kinabalu where you can easily leave the luggage and explore the city.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff could not have made more effort to make our stay extra special! It was our first wedding anniversary and the team incorporated lots of little touches into our stay which made it even more special. The whole team we’re friendly helpful and so accommodating the entire time. We returned again with our families for a day trip because we loved it so much, and I would highly recommend to anyone.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The cleanliness, staff are really welcome, bed, selection of food n pool
Cons: None
5.8 Okay
Pros: Location is close to the airport
Cons: Checkin service and restaurant service was unfriendly, slow and they didn’t bring us the food and brought the wrong drinks order! The hotel mostly caters for the Asian market so the bars and breakfast were very loud and busy and we didn’t feel very welcome. There were also a lot of children so it’s not for a place for couples. We’ve stayed in three hotels in K.K. on our trip and I definitely wouldn’t stay here again. You can get something much better for your money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Perfect service. Helpful staff with excellent knowledge of English. The room with sea view is great (sunsets are unforgettable). There’s everything in the room what you need. Right of reception is the tour firm. They offer wonderful tours. We bought Mari Mari (very informative and exciting). And diving (super crew!!!). Very close from the center («welcome seafood restaurant is pretty good, fresh seafood), not expensive on the taxi.

7.0 Good
Pros: Kind, helpful and efficient staff. Convenient location.
Cons: I had to get up very early to go to the airport, but it was not possible to sleep quietly because: - there was a concert until 11 pm in the street and you hear it in the room as if you were in the street yourself, although the windows were closed - someone (I don't know who) called my room phone by mistake twice around 11.30pm - some other customers were shouting in the corridor around 3am.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic location & very helpful staffs
7.9 Good

3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Easy access to city center.
Cons: All nothing.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The Sea View.
Cons: 1. Bad Check in Experience. A) Check in experience was well below par for a Club Floor room. Room was not a Club Twin as requested. Was upgraded to a Jr. SUITE without a Twin beds. Had to wait for a Twin room for some time. Stressful check in experience. Booked Sea view. No sea view available had to wait for sea view room to be vacant. B) Service is horrible. Staff not attentive. No managers or supervisors monitoring Staff constantly had to be called for service. C) Food quality & selection is poor. For the price paid :No value for money. Worse Club Cocktail hour ever experienced. D) Lounge full of mosquitoes n staff could do nothing. Bitten all over while drinking bottle of wine. E) Cleanliness of property. The small beach & surrounding waters was dirty. Had rubbish floating in water ect. Pool side Cafe. Staff didn't clear fast enough even though not busy. Pigeons attacked leftovers on plates left uncleared. Huge mess of food bits all over courtesy of the pigeons. Staff not attentive or service oriented. Property needs better maintenance & upkeep.
4.6 Okay
Pros: The Sea View which I had booked & almost didn't get.
Cons: No value for money. Mediocre service n not up to par quality of food. General cleanliness sorely lacking.
7.1 Good
Pros: Water front and good for swim with younger children
Cons: Facility is old and need maintanance
7.5 Good
Pros: Hotel guests have access to the Marina Country Club.
Cons: The hotel is refurbishing their rooms, but our room is still the old one, so it's little run down. The selection of food in breakfast is limited in the club lounge.
7.5 Good
Pros: The pool is fantastic and usually no problems getting a lounger. Had several great dinners at Cafe Boleh and absolutely excellent service from waiter Josdie, he is a huge asset to the resort. Overall staff were very good and friendly. Fabulous cocktails (best pina colada ever). Lovely, large and refurbished rooms. Very convenient having boat access to islands from resort. Lots of facilities (restaurants, movie cinema, swimming pools, billiards/table tennis/tennis/badminton, bowling alley...).
Cons: It's pretty busy, so lobby area and breakfast buffet a bit of a madhouse at times. They ran out of pool towels twice in the time we were there which was very annoying and impractical. It's a long walk back to the room for a bath towel and why should you have to? That is happened once was bad, twice was unacceptable (I emailed but did not get a reply). One night a car alarm went off at around 10:30pm and was blaring for over an hour, keeping everyone awake. It went off again at 6:45am the following morning which woke everyone up and this went on for 75 minutes. Breakfast was really average, and every day (we were there 6 nights) there was problems with the coffee machines, at least one (usually more) not working. Difficult to find some of the facilites initially e.g. bowling alley - some signage would be useful as well as info on opening hours and pricing. No bath towels in one of our rooms upon arrival, and no hand towels in the other. Had a couple of spa treatments, they were okay but nothing special and quite pricey. Access to outside area is not great (poor indoor/outdoor flow).
4.2 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: Three stars hotel , sold like five stars. Inside the room bad smell
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place for a weekend gateway for me and definitely an excellent hotel for golf players and for families.
6.3 Good
Pros: Rooms and the view from balcony is outstanding. It is a huge hotel. There are lots of swimming pools ( but they are only 1,5m deep each). I dont like golf but if you do so there is a huge golf field.
Cons: There is no beach at this hotel. There are 2 men made `beach like` places but they are 10m wide each. Maximum 10 people can use it in the same time. If you want beach do not stay in this hotel . Go to Nexus or some other hotel with a proper beach.. If you insist to stay here then there are boats to islands hourly. I suggest you to go to islands to swim. Also foods are expensive. Water sports staff on the boats are unkind. ( the ones in the marina was very kind) .
6.7 Good
Pros: Loved Pacific Sutera.Good location very good service and Henry on front desk was the best.He was always ready for any questions.Rooms were good but did not like the pillows. If we come back we will stay in same hotel.Thank you to all the staff.
Cons: Please if you can change the bed too hard.
6.3 Good
Pros: Good Location reasonably priced friendly staff and good access to town
Cons: The cost of golf is extremely expensive for Malaysian standards and whilst the course is quite good and well maintained you are paying top dollar for the privalage to play the course
3.7 Mediocre
Pros: The swimming pool was good !
Cons: Furniture is a bit out of date. The group entertaining at the lobby is not really enjoyable while besides that the whole day the same back-ground music is playing, quite boring !
7.0 Good
Pros: The room is really nice and clean, they also provide shuttle bus to city, really thoughtful. At night, there is a live singing show in the lobby lounge, it was also good.
Cons: The time of checking in was too long and the staff of front desk was a bit careless. However, it was not a big deal, for the staff, overall, I would say, they are quite good and professional.
6.8 Good
Pros: Excellent food, friendly and helpful staff, nice grounds
Cons: room decor a little dated, no flat screen tv, no dvd player
5.6 Okay
Pros: Hotel staff are very friendly
Cons: Should allowed the window to be opened so that some fresh air can come into the room
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff were friendly. Our children were upgraded to an executive room free of charge. Our room was lovely with a view of the pool and the sea.
Cons:
7.6 Good
Pros: Excellent choice of restaurants ..breakfast buffet was very good

7.2 Good
Pros: Views and staff
Cons: Restaurants are bit over-priced. Venician blinds separating the bedroom and the bathroom are bit too kinky!!

Overview Reviews
Hyatt Regency Kinabalu is a 14 story highrise in the heart of Kota Kinabalu city overlooking the island-studded South China Sea. Features a 5 story atrium lobby in the heart of of the business, shopping and entertainment district.
8.2 Excellent
Pros: Great front desk and concierge services. They were all very pleasant and helpful. The beds are meticulously made, clean and comfy
Cons: The room is comfortable and clean but needs to be updated. Eg the kettle & coffee making facilities were hidden in a drawer instead of out in the open for guests to see. If the staff didn't tell me about it, I wouldn't have known. The pool is also not great.
7.0 Good
Pros: good location
Cons: bad Wifi!!!!
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Position, friendly staff, modern facilities, fridge, iron, hair dryer, thin quilt (not hot).Plenty of bottled water.Nice pool.
5.0 Okay
Pros: The position was good, the view out towards the sea was nice-ish and the selection of food was good. The shower was spacious and the pool was good.
Cons: The room we staid just needed a really good update: the furniture showed wear and tear and the carpet just did not live up to the HYATT name (dirty with stain all over). A couple of nights as you came into the room you could smell a strong scent of cigarette (maybe the aircon) and that was disgusting. The beds’ pillows around the pool looked dirty with lots of stains. Very pricey for what we got.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely room, best breakfast buffet we’d ever experienced
Cons: Pool was a little disappointing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Service was good and the hotel staff makes an effort to help you and make your stay comfortable
Cons: It’s a bit run down and in need of an upgrade
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The Indian/Sabahan female front office staff had given us a very friendly and welcoming service. The room was very comfortable and we slept well.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: All staff are very friendly. The chalet is very comfortable. Special thanks to Einstein Moses for the very warm welcome and service.
Cons: The meal in perahu restaurant should be improved.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I like everything except the food
Cons: The food need improvement..
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff of the hotel is very very nice. They are really kind and helpful, and made everything to make our staf fantastic. The island is beautiful, we really enjoyed the beauty of the place and walking around the island up to sunset point.
Cons: There are two problems on this island, and they are not directly related to the hotel. The first problem is the garbage lying all over the beach and in the sea. We were really disappointed when we got into the water to see all the plastic everywhere. The main beach is cleaned regularly which is a good start but when walking on other parts of the island or when snorkeling, plastic is still everywhere... it ruins the beauty of the place. Plastic should be forbidden or highly limited and regulated.. The second issue is the never ending sound of boats doing the transfers between the different islands. Is it really necessary to have more than 100 boats coming on this island every day ? And more importantly, do they really have to play very loud techno music? Not sure about that. The boats stopped around 4pm though, which made the end of the day the best part of our experience on this island.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There were a lot of negative reviews about wifi and the restaurant being the only food for dinner. They must have forgotten it is an island, were very impressed considering how small it is. Overall, the facilities were clean and beautiful. The perfect place to relax! Padi diving centre was also a treat for any licensed divers.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great food and service
Cons: Beds were hard
8.0 Excellent
Pros: All the staff are absoltely lovely and very helpful. The white beaches and warm clear water were exactly what I wished for. The private beach with sun-lounges and shade cloth for guests (away from the hundreds of tourists) is fabulous and you can even get food and drink service to your lounge on the beach. Off the private beach there is a great coral section (with live coral and lots of fish) which is super for snorkelling. The restaurant has lounges and a lovely view, and serves fresh food and cold drinks.
Cons: The rubbish!! I don't understand why the hotel management don't employ groundsmen to clean all the grounds and the beaches. I only saw one man cleaning a little section on the private beach. There is a lot of plastic rubish washed up on the beaches all the way around the island and nothing is cleaned away. The tourists leave rubbish on the ground too and it is still there the next day. Rubbish was even in piles outside my bathroom window. Also, There are little reef sharks in a green dirty tank at the marine centre...this is cruel, if nothing else clean the tank. The pool water was cloudy - need a pool man to get the water balance right so it is crystal clear...so I didn;t swim in it. The accommodation is new and nice, but the rest of the facilities are a little tired and worn and need maintenance.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: The breakfast and the service team
Cons: Hotel only has 1 restaurant for food and it's very pricey. The pool was in very bad condition. The island is filthy with garbage and infested with sand flies towards the evening. The corals were mostly damaged around the beach and the visibility was very poor. There is nothing to do at night.
7.5 Good
Pros: The facilities were just right as to offer guests enough comfort without overdoing it in a natural environment. Staff was friendly. Complimentary water and soft drinks generously provided daily. And a 5-star dive center nearby.
Cons: WiFi signal was weak. Bring a book to read at night as there isn’t much else to do. Quite a lot of flies at the restaurants (but not elsewhere, strangely).

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Location is perfect for exploring the city with many restaurants and shops across the street. Rooms were excellent. Breakfast was mediocre. Would stay there again
Cons: The pool is nice but most of the day it’s in the shade and faces the jungle not the ocean. It is still very peaceful.
7.5 Good
Pros: The location, it's centrally located in the heart of the city. I love how the nearby streets turned alive at day and night with different activities. Just go out the door and walk the streets.
Cons: The breakfast is tasteless. I've been to smaller hotels and less established but considering this hotel's stature, a lot can bit improved in term of their cookings.
7.9 Good
Pros: Hotel in the city centre
Cons: Hotel need refurbishment
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Near to town, walk away
7.9 Good
Pros: A lot of choices
Cons: The room's floor.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very central, clean and comfortable. Staff are lovely and happy to help
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Welcoming staff who were cooperative in allowing us an upgrade at no additional cost to stay in the same room for our second night which we had booked separately from our organised trip. Breakfast was extensive and leisurely till !0 am.
Cons: The dynamic pricing which meant we paid more for a Friday night stay in a lesser room at the beginning of the trip than we did for a superior deluxe room at the end of the trip. They were booked at the same time...why should this be ? I understand supply and demand but this sort of profiteering does not go down well with these foreign visitors.

Pros: The location is perfect. A mall across the road; bars, restaurants, the pathway to signal hill and buses to Kinabulu NP all within a short walk. The staff were very helpful with all of my requests and friendly too. A great view to the islands from the window.
Cons: The room was compact. It was a tight squeeze past the table and chair to close the curtains.

Cons: There were those small sugar ants around the kettle area which kept coming back,

Pros: The island provides great privacy and the view of Mt Kinabalu. After climb the mountain, we truly need a good rest in resort. The staff are friendly and dinner is gorgeous. Highly recommended!

Pros: friendly staff
Cons: had to walk a long way to room

Pros: The service is great and staff are nice and helpful. Great location to restros and shops. Nice roof top bar and pool.
Cons: We stay the whole trip there (4 nights). We suffer from electricity shortage 3 out of 4 with lights keep on and off a while. The technician comes at the 1st time but the situation remains. I can’t say it’s the hotel fault as they tell us it’s due to unstable power supply from electricity company. But I don’t expect it happens few times like haunted house..

Pros: Staff
Cons: When u order room service, u Need to pay extra charge just for deliver the food in your room

Pros: Pool and bar were nice, bed was comfy and the shower was good
Cons: Got stung by a whole bunch of local taxes at the end of my stay I new nothing about and a 200"ringit deposit when I arrived that was also never mentioned. Pros: Staff and management extremely helpful, and made the stay a real treat. Whilst the pool area was being renovated, an offer to use a sister hotels facilities was provided without hesitation - really appreciated.

Pros: The location and the cleanliness of the room
6.5 Good
Cons: I wanted to change my itinerary and bring my hotel stay a day forward, from the 21st to the 20th. I offerred to pay the difference in rate if any. Hotel staff told me they cannot do that for me as booking was made via a third party. It was actually made via a fourth party as Kayak outsorced it to getaroom.com. The actual helpline indicated in the booking email (469-675-5368) was possibly run by a fifth party. They were utterly unhelpful with my request to change the booking date by a day, even though I did offer to pay any difference in price. Rigidly cited some sort of policy. I went back to the hotel staff in person and tey also continued to refuse to help. The consequence was that I had to book another hotel for the 20th, did not stay at Le Meridien on the 21st and my money was wasted. I will not be booking via Getaroom ever again and I will be avoiding Le Meridien.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff are excellent as usual.
Cons: Nothing that I do not like on this trip.
