Pros: Lovely location right in the heart of Cannery Row and on the waterfront. This is not an inexpensive hotel but let's face it this is an InterContinental brand not a Motel 6. If you want to splurge this is a good choice however if you don't need a waterfront view and stay in the connected bldg. across the street you can get a room with a fireplace for less. I found this hotel to be relaxing and the staff helpful. Even without a waterfront room they have a large deck area looking out into Monterey Bay where you can sit in front of a fire pit with your friends or by yourself and sip your favorite beverage and enjoy the view and some down time from busy Cannery Row.

Cons: The rooms have a joint door and you can clearly hear the noise from the next room. In our case there was a baby crying the whole night and we couldn't sleep. On calling the helpdesk, the Manager offered us free breakfast. It was a good gesture to offer b/fast but the hotel should seriously think on the noise issue due to joining room doors. That design doesn't work. Also the swimming pool is very small and just for namesake.

Pros: You can't beat the location- just a block away from the Monterrey Bay Aquarium and right on Cannery Row. Staff was all very nice and the facilities were top notch.
Cons: The restaurant was not pricey and not very good. This is a small complaint, as the view was outstanding and there are plenty of better places to eat within easy walking distance. Would have been nice if wifi was included with room.

Pros: This was a great location within walking distance of phenomenal dining and wine tasting rooms. Room was exceptional, the service excellent and the spa personnel accommodating. First deep tissue massage I ever tapped out for a slightly lesser pressure. We will return over and over again. You have to stay here when in Monterrey!

Pros: You would think that a place this convenient on Cannery Row would skimp on the amenities but it does not. The rooms are incredibly spacious and lovely. The beds are incredibly comfortable, although the pillows are a tad too soft. The windows open - a rarity now days - letting in the sea breeze. And it's steps away from the Aquarium and plenty of shops / restaurants.

Cons: I thought booking a hotel right next to the water that I could be hearing waves in the tranquility of the evening. Instead I hear cars and foot traffic because our room is all the way back and faces the garage. This hotel was almost three times the cost of any equivalent hotel if it wasn't next to the waves I didn't get to hear.

Pros: Located right as you get downtown, it is walking distance to everything. This makes finding parking a nonissue. Yay. The breakfasts were homemade and nice. Quiche, fresh fruit slices, muffins in addition to the usual fare. The room was clean. The bed was comfortable.

Cons: Paid LOTS of money for a room with a king size bed. This place is NOISY. The sound of people flushing their toilets or running their showers is incredible. The banged up used furniture in our room needs replacing. Knobs were missing from the end tables and chest. The upholstery on the two chairs were pathetic. We parked on the street because this hotel does not have enough parking spaces to accommodate guests. WILL NOT STAY HERE AGAIN.

Pros: Normandy Inn is a charming small place, located on the main street in Carmel, close to everything, including the beach. We checked in into two rooms, both in good shape, recently renovated, clean, and comfortable. Mattresses were comfortable too. Breakfast was adequate: cereal, some pasties, fruit and hard boiled eggs.
Cons: We had a dispute with the two clerks on duty regarding our reservation: they thought that we had reserved three rooms while in fact we had only two. After a cordial greeting, the discussion turned into arguments. In the end we found that they have misread our reservation. No apologies were offered. Some patience and a simple "sorry" would have helped.

Pros: I was looking for the best hotel for the most reasonable price that accepted dogs. This was the one that I found using Hotels.com and Yelp and other resources. They honored my reservation made late last year and I was able to bring my dog. That was really great. The rooms were very nice, very clean. It was an excellent value for the money. Some people complained about the noise but I did not notice any problems with that. Staff was very nice and allowed me to keep my trailer parked in the lot while my boat was on the water. That allowed me flexibility during my visit.
Cons: The front parking lot was very tight and very full. The back lot was not accessible due to construction but I assume that would free help once construction ceased. They no longer accept dogs. I would go back again if they allowed dogs still. In fact, it would be the only place I would go while staying there. The fridge is a little small but many food options were nearby so storing food is not really highly necessary.

Pros: A nice room in a good location. Everything was clean and comfortable. The shower was really nice and the bed was comfortable.
Cons: My room was upgraded to a fireplace room but there was not a way to turn on the gas to light the fireplace. I am sure I could have called down and they would have sent a key for the gas. It seemed to be too much trouble at the time.

Pros: Staff was fantastic- just very accomodating, friendly and really made an effort to make the stay enjoyable. Can't say enough about the staff. I was sitting reading on their pretty outdoor patio and they offered me a glass of wine, even though the bar wouldn't be open for another few hours. Room was really great- spacious, updated fixtures and hardware (felt like a swanky room), and without any ambient noise at all. Plush soft towels, comfortable bedding- the whole experience just made us both feel like "ok, we're staying at a NICE hotel." We were on the second floor facing the street and really didn't get any street noise at all either. If we're ever back in the area, we will definitely stay here again.

Pros: Modern room update. Extra sink/ mirror outside of bathroom which is always useful. Very clean. Comfortable bed and bedding. Fireplace which would be lovely in cool weather. Centrally located. The safe in our room would not open and my things were in it. The hotel staff could not fix it although the maintenance guy was able to get it open. The manager gave us a voucher for the restaurant which was appreciated.
Cons: Small room size. No air conditioning which I realize they don't need very often, but it was quite warm when we were there.

Cons: Room is too crowded with stuff. Lack of space for luggage and yourself. We were on first floor where they recommend locking windows plus people could see in. Two small windows on the parking/alley side did not provide enough air considering there was no A/C. Also very noisy in the morning on that side. Add to that was the fact the screens were ripped. TV had a cheap, crappy remote. The location is only okay. Price too high for the product.

Pros: We often stay in Monterey and we very much like this place. It's location is great if you don't mind walking a little, and the rooms are nice, clean and well-equipped.
Cons: The amenities are small -- workout room, pool, etc... but when in Monterey there isn't a reason to stay at the hotel anyway. During peak season, the rooms are a little pricey here

Cons: Hotel was under construction. It was loud and not the least bit relaxing. We were woken up in the middle of the night by drunks cursing in the plaza area. The carpet in the room was stained. The power went out multiple times and I had one family member get stuck in the elevator. The staff was friendly but my experience overall was not pleasant.

Pros: The guest rooms are large and nicely appointed. The bed is comfortable. Breakfast is very nice in Jacks restaurant. The entire staff is quite accommodating. We've stayed here many times in the past and will continue to stay here.
Cons: Our room was in a noisy location--on the second floor overlooking an open area where people walked, sat, rode bikes, played music and generally enjoyed the outdoors. The windows were not double-paned and the room was noisier than we would have liked. The bathroom was remodled with a lovely marble countertop--unfortunately it was rather tall for me to use (I'm a 4'11" woman.)

Pros: We love the Portillo but the construction is very distracting. We come about once a year and last year it was complete distraction as well. The room we got this trip was so noisy. We could hear everyone walking by yelling and screaming in the middle of the night. I wish we had staying in the main building. Everything else was oerfect! Cons: Their premier ocean view rooms looked like a holiday In or 3 star hotel at the best. Very poor design and ambiance. Bad holiday in furniture , plastic trees and plants. I expected more for $500 per night, at least rooms that looked better. Also, rooms have no balconeys and hotel does not have a jacuzzi. It is possible that the hotel is offering value for the budget traveller (hard to imagine at over $500 per night). I did notice that better hotels where 30% more expensive when I was in Carmel. I would have preferred to pay about 30% more for better accomadations.

Cons: Very noisy! Don’t underestimate the other reviews. They’ve got an old steam-based heating system that has a ton of air in it. As a result, you will get woken up all throughout the night to loud banging noise, like someone is taking a hammer to a steal pipe. The sound is coming out of the heater in the room. Do not choose this hotel if you want a good nights sleep. Also very dated rooms. The quality of the room is about what you’d expect from a Travelodge, it does not in any way live up to the $400+ price tag.

Pros: The views are stunning and the property is a gem. Gorgeous location off the main road but within a super close walking distance (and if walking isn't for you, there is a shuttle provided). Clean rooms, comfortable beds, extremely wonderful staff. The extras are at every turn - free wine tasting, chocolates on the pillows, hot coco when we checked in, etc. One of the best breakfast buffets I've had. I've stayed here twice and plan on returning every time I visit Carmel.

Pros: Perfect location in the heart Carmel. Center of all shops and restaurants. Slight ocean view in our room and could hear the waved when it was quiet at night. Great service, free breakfast delivered to your room, tremendously clean, cozy and comfortable.

We live in the 21st century where technology and science are at its peak. The host or person who worked in the front (Gita) was not apologetic, nor were we informed about the situation. It almost felt like a tiny home during our 4 night stay. We also loved how close it was to the downtown area and lots of good restaurants. Only 1 mile from the aquarium, we walked there and back. overall had a wonderful time at this hotel, we even stayed an extra night.

The socket in the bathroom didn’t work so I had to find an alternate one and all the others were awkwardly placed so it was hard to get ready in the morning. I was beside the stairs and I listened to loud noisy people run up and down them all night, especially children. My phone didn’t work the first night either. The loud fan also only had two setting apparently even th it clearly had more but only low and high worked. High nearly had it flying off the ceiling and low did nothing. It was very hot in the room; they even put a fan in the hallway on the second floor. I’ve stayed at cheaper hotels with larger rooms and more comfortable beds; the price, I think, is due to location.

Pros: The best features of this hotel are the location and the history of the hotel. We enjoyed the bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. The continental breakfast was good.
Cons: The furniture, while antique and ornate, was large and bulky in the small rooms. It is not a comfortable place to stay, with little space to maneuver around. The television (which was nearly as old as the room itself) was hidden in a wardrobe that couldn't open all the way because of the california king bed. Therefore, only one person laying in bed could actually see the screen. There was no desk or workspace in the room. The hotel acknowledges the paper thin walls and provides guests with earplugs to block out noise from other guests and the streets below. The overall experience at the Monterey Hotel was fine, but I only recommend it because of the location.

Pros: Absolutely charming historic hotel located in the heart of downtown Monterey! 5 minute drive to the aquarium and a five minute walk to the beach and Fisherman's Wharf. Stayed two nights with our young family with 3 kids, and they loved every bit down to how they folded the napkins and toilet paper prior to our stay. Breakfast was overflowing with ripe strawberries and Boyd's coffee, and the staff dug up a corkscrew to keep and some wine glasses so we could enjoy our bottle from wine country. All in all, wish we could have stayed longer, and very pleased with its prime location and roaring 20's charm.

Pros: We stayed at The Monterey Hotel while visiting our son and his girlfriend. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. The hotel is located central in Old Monterey. The hotel is old so don't expect a lot of modern touches but also be prepared for some beautiful architectural details from the early 1900s! Our room was very small but comfy. We felt more like we were in a guest room at someone's home than in a hotel but that's not a bad thing! The windows and walls are not soundproof so if you're a light sleeper do like we did and request a room in the quiet part of the hotel. But be warned, this may be in the back of the hotel so you may need eye shades as the security light in the back of the hotel is quite bright! Also be warned that there is no working elevator so if you have mobility issues (cannot walk up multiple flights of stairs) you might want to talk with the staff to see if they can accommodate your special needs before booking. I have a bad knee and did just fine staying on the third floor as long as I didn't have to go up and down more than three times a day.
Cons: The only drawback to this hotel is there is no onsite parking. This isn't too bad as there is a loading -unloading area right in front of the hotel. The best secure parkng is in the public parking structure a few streets away. The price is $7 a day but there is no in and out privileges. But when the hotel is right on the main drag you don't really need your car too much! If you want to park on the cheap then you can find curbside parking for free after 6pm but these spots are hard to come by. You just need to move your car before 9am the next day.

Pros: I had a lovely stay here. I see a lot of noise complainers in the comments here, but it's an old building, so what can you do? The hotel seemed to be sensitive to this and included earplugs and a nice note in our room. We were positioned near the infamously loud stairs but still slept soundly without having to use the earplugs. Honestly, the seagulls outside were more noticeable than any noises within the building, but still not especially bothersome. Can I gripe about that? You're a block from the waterfront, that's part of the charm. The room was not opulently luxurious, but still a bit fancy. Everything was very clean and the staff were kind when we spoke with them. The hotel has a historical feel and seems well maintained. I have no complaints. I think anyone with reasonable expectations would be pleased with this hotel. It's also a 15-20 minute walk from the aquarium.

Again, this didn't bother me at all, but some people might care. Their on-site valet parking was pricey ($17 I think?), so we opted for the $7/day public garage 1 block away and lugged our bags.

It is located conveniently close to many differing restaurants, and of course the real touristy hotspots are only a few blocks away. Bring your walking shoes!

There are stairs everywhere, so even if you ride the elevator up, once you get to your floor it's the old-fashioned "wandering" hotel with weirdly set up hallways and you go out of one building into others, and there are stairs everywhere! Only 3-5 stairs but railings are only on one side if at all, and there's no forewarning of that fact.

In other hotels I've stayed at these are included in the price, not an additional fee. Also, the staff (specifically the front desk staff) were not as nice as you would expect of a "Resort". When we checked in the staff didn't welcome us or anything. She just wanted our reservation & credit card. When we asked questions, she seemed annoyed like we were holding her up from more important things. I felt more like cattle than a guest. Overall, for the price I paid I could of gotten a room in Monterey Bay, close to a Beach in Monterey which in my option has a better view of the water.

No extras at all. Door had to be slammed shut. Tub wouldn’t drain. Shower barely worked. They told us no non fires yet they were having them and completely smoked out our room. Would NEVER stay here. By the way they charge a resort fee but there’s nothing that you get for that money pool is not open hot tub is drained and there is literally nothing else you can do there besides play on the beach the beach is free.

Pros: When we first got there the view was stunning. The beach was right there and there were public access points to it, making access to the beach easy. Our room was an ocean view. It had a great feature for windows where there was an automatic screen that could go over it for privacy. The staff were friendly and the room as a whole was very clean and comfy. The place felt like luxury and we thought it would be a lot more for the price. Would definitely recommended it.

When we told all this to the manager, he tried switching us to a different room but we didn't accept as it was exactly the same. At that point the manager told us that we shouldn't expect more from a 3-star hotel. So if you care about your room being clean, and overpaying for an upscale motel, then avoid this hotel.

Pros: I liked that it was near the water. Most of the staff was very friendly and very helpful. The view from my room was amazing. The bed was comfortable.
Cons: There was construction going on while I was there that was a bit disruptive. The pool and Jacuzzi were closed. They put me under the conference rooms and they got pretty loud during my stay. The fees were higher than stated in my original agreement plus they tax the fees and everything else.

Cons: Noise was the biggest issue: the ceilings creaked a lot every time the people above us moved around. It felt like we could hear everything they were doing. If you're thinking about staying here, definitely try and get a 2nd-floor room. Since our room was very near a busy street, we also heard a lot of noise from traffic and passing cars.

Pros: Staff members were very warm and welcoming and the free breakfast was better than similarly-priced hotels, offering cereal, mini muffins, fruit coffee and even (really good) do-it-yourself waffles. Our room came standard with an extremely large king-sized bed. An added bonus was the mini fridge - great for keeping our camping groceries cold as we traveled through California.
Cons: Only real downside was that while taking a shower, I noticed that there were stray hairs on one of the walls - remnants from the previous guest(s). Not a huge deal to us as the rest of the room was spotless and we were staying less than 24h, but a bit off-putting nonetheless.

The rooms and bathroom were spacious, the bed was comfortable, showers hot, we didn't hear a lot of noise from adjacent rooms, and we had a nice view (3rd floor) out to the ocean. The omelets at the attached restaurant were fabulous - highly recommended! The hotel was minutes away (by car) from both Carmel and downtown Monterey - I would definitely stay there again. Great value for money. Helpful and friendly staff too.

The towels were clean. The Restrooms were clean. I didn't use the pool or the hot tub during my stay. The hotel has a interesting design.
Cons: Due to the nature of the design there are spiders hanging from the lights. The toilet did not work correctly. During the morning it would flush and at night it would refuse flush. Not sure if its by design during the drought or if it was just not working.

Cons: The heater did not work, had to go get a space heater from the front desk. There was mold in the bathroom that made us both sick. One of the bath towels was clearly past its prime with holes and frayed edges. Neither the bathtub or the sink drained resulting in a shower with your feet submerged in dirty water and a sink that took a ton of water to rinse out. There were little bugs flying all around in the bathroom and dead stuck to the walls everywhere. I think they bit me. The front desk promised a breakfast buffet until 11, but when we showed up at 10:45 we were told they had already put everything away. When we sat down to order breakfast cooked to order, they brought me a little creamer pitcher, with one of the little bugs in it. Yuck. Ordered white toast, it was hard as a rock. We asked for another piece of toast to replace it and it came back twice as hard and burnt. We gave up on the toast and coffee. Oh and did I mention the bum digging through the trash outside our window?

Furniture didn't fit the size of the room which made it even more cramped. The pool was heated but only slightly. The water temp was 70. Very cold after a short swim. This hotel did not fit the reviews that were given. I would stay at other more appropriate locations and pay more for amnesties. They had no complimentary continental breakfast. We didn't locate the frig in the room till the last day as it was in what looked like a drawer on a night stand. This was a $60/ night hotel with a very good resteraunt.
