Drop off with John at Avis was really great! Such courteous and friendly service. So nice to see such professionalism. Would be great to have instructions in the car for using Satnav maps. I used my iPhone but was a little confused with car screen presentation at times. Overall a fabulous experience and would definitely recommend Avis at this location.

Pretty good all round experience. The staff in particular were superb. High quality feel to the offices and overall experience. Check-in was a little tricky due to the split nature of the registration and garage desks, but not terrible. We went to the wrong one first.

Cons:

Cigarette lighter did not work so could not use my own satnav and had to buy a map. As a rule, cars seem to be advertised as a focus / mondeo or similar and despite hiring lots of cars, I almost never receive the car that is advertised - I know the brief on this, but whole process seems a bit of a ruse. The Excess amount to be charged for a potential incident is excessive. Not very easy to see bumps / scuffs / chips etc on the car in the dark on pick-up or to be fair on drop-off.

Kiosk style mobile pickup in an underground garage where there is no phone reception. The credit card reader wasn’t working and they wanted to drive me to another location to pay. It took 40 minutes, even though I was the only customer and they decided at the end to use their own network to call in my payments and details to the other station. On return at 515 pm there was no one there and no sign of any kind, such as explaining where the key drop was. The Budget phone lines close at 4pm (one) and 5 pm (the other). Very annoying.

The car was to come with a GPS but it wasn’t installed. They don’t provide portable GPS units. Fortunately we have a cell phone with us and the charge cord fits. They were very helpful in explaining the car’s features and the car manual was supplied.

Pros:

Near to my hotel, quite centralize. The car was clean and in good condition.

Cons:

The drop-off point have very limited parking place and should have informed customer on any public holiday as we were not told about it. We have encountered some issues and could not find anyone to consult with despite paying so much money.

I was hugely disappointed overall. Just to change the pick up from city center to the airport turned out to be impossible. The location in city center is very difficult to find, even by cabbies. And to get a car big enough to accommodate our luggage, that had been fully explained in our request last September, cost an additional 500 pounds. What was a good deal turned into exploitation. Either lose all our prepaid money or pony up the extra money and drag all our luggage into the city center to get a bigger car. We’re all in our sixties— not good customer service to me! With Hertz, we spent half us much for two weeks as we spent for one week with Sixt. Kane at the airport and Adam at city center were very helpful at getting us in a larger vehicle but at a cost. On the other hand, the online assistance was non existent. Rude, extremely slow to respond and not helpful. I won’t be using Sixt again.

Our car was not available when we arrived and it took 2.5 hours for them to get a new one. The replacement car was much larger so they charged us double for the “upgrade”. Very unhappy with the experience.

The location is hard to get to, and the representative tried to upsell us to a Mercedes for an additional 500 pounds to the point of almost arguing with us that we booked the wrong car. The online insurance I bought was also not accepted either and we had no idea until I got to the counter, so I lost that money too. It cost me another 250 pounds for their insurance. The car was clean, and got us where we needed to go.

A car was available for me to drive. That was good. The bad: 1) Original quote was for £ 275 - the local Hertz desk charged me £ 691 and tried to charge me over £ 800!! 2) I requested an automatic transmission and got a stick 3) there was a huge scratch in the rear passenger door 4) There was no return sign at the Inverness airport for Hertz, all the other rental car agencies were represented but not Hertz. We had to drive around for 10 min trying to find it, and luckily saw the tiny Hertz sign upon leaving the airport. Kind of a disaster regarding the drop off.

We enjoyed our Ford Kuga for our Scottish Highlands road trip. Although the car doesn't have the oomph as other cars, it certainly met our needs. The car had ample space for our luggage and provided a good ride.

Check your car before you rent. Some hubcap scratches cost $100 because I didn't inspect before I rented. The employee was difficult, the location hard to reach, and they offered no assistance with finding my way in the city.

1. Didn't have the car I rented. 2. Put me in something that didn't have the necessary trunk space...option of upgrading at over double the price to get something that worked. 3. Flat tire after hitting major pothole...No spare. No replacement tire in Scotland. 4. Tow to Edinburgh airport, replaced car to mid-size SUV with run-flat tires...3 times original price.

Predatory practices around car damage, and didn't accept the 3rd party insurance coverage that I had purchased. At the point of pickup I then needed to provide additional coverage through my credit card. Poor communication and customer service throughout.

Extremely poor experience. They are deceptive with their pricing on third party sites and force you to pay more for unlimited mileage and collision coverage. I had to pay 5 times what I originally booked the service for. Please stay away.

I had to pay an additional $400 when I arrived. They did not honor kayaks unlimited miles booking. This rental cost almost $800, twice what I originally booked through kayak and they said it was kayaks fault.
