Everything was a great experience EXCEPT..........One major Issue that if it was not for my bank manager answering his email in Canada immediately bless his heart while I was standing at the car rental company (SIXT) in Northern Ireland.... I would have been screwed for almost double my car rental. Travelers!!!! Be aware and alert.... BEFORE LEAVING Canada..... if you are using your credit card to cover the insurance of your car rental, MAKE VERY SURE that you get a letter from your Bank card Holder stating that they are covering the replacement cost of the vehicle in the event of an accident abroad. It is NOT ENOUGH to just know that your credit card will cover insurance on your rental car. You have to get it in writing as a letter either from Visa or your bank that carries the credit card. The car rental will need to see and have a copy of it. Otherwise you will pay LOTS more for the car rental than you originally expected it would be. My car rental was $169.00 cdn for three days in Ireland and without the letter my bank emailed me instantly (lucky for me) the car rental would have charged me an additional $170.00 for added car replacement cost insurance without the letter. Other than the the car rental company SIXT and Kayak were great and the price was excellent. Kevin

Pros:

Staff was polite but overall experience wasn't good

Cons:

We were refused and our reservation was cancelled because the insurance company didn't want to give us allowance due to lack of experience of driving in UK. We didn't want to take any insurance at all but that how the cancellation was explained.

Cons:

No signage in or out of the Belfast airport as to the location of their office. Finally had to walk to a hotel out of airport to get directions. When I returned the car, was told the (plastic) hubcaps were scratched, thus they would have to charge me $135.00 extra. This was in addition to the insurance I was forced to buy when renting. Had no time to argue as I was trying to catch a train. Very unhappy, feel like I was fleeced.

Cons:

SIXT TRIED TO FORCE INVALID INSURANCE. I rent cars regularly with the same credit card. The card is usually swiped and I'm signing (even with Sixt in other countries). I forgot the PIN as I always use signature. Sixt at BFS refused the card telling as it has a chip a PIN must be provided. I suggested a couple of ways how to get around their problem, but they insisted to follow a their idea: pay for an expensive insurance. I showed them my existing 3rd party excess reduction insurance. They forced the idea that I should buy their insurance for the same even after understanding that a 2nd insurance for the same purpose would be invalid. I walked out and rented at a nearby other company. I suggest to avoid them.

Unexpectedly hit with a £1500 deposit that was hidden in the small print that you don’t actually get a copy of. The customer before me had an even higher price. Sales reps obviously know this is dropped on people picking up cars as they immediately go from lovely to defensive and aggressive as soon as the customer is like “wait, what?” You can waive it by paying 150% extra to your initial rental….sort that out and they also take another £100 deposit for fuel! Hired a medium car and got a tiny Kia Rio with a driving performance tracker box.

Pros:

Car, cleanliness, ease of process. Overall car hire as it should be - no excess hard sell, just here’s your car and off you go. Return even simpler.

Cons:

Delay in picking up due to 1 person only dealing with all Budget and Avis rentals. Not his fault - he was very efficient and friendly but policy decision to employ only 1 person to cover all pickups for 2 companies.

I was charged an extra insurance product that wasn't in the pricing and left with no choice but to take it at the time. Fuel tank was also not full as per Ts & Cs. My fault for going to a lower quality provider than the main players but I won't be back. It would be cheaper to accept the higher headline costs from Budget or Hertz in future.

A couple of hours after returning our vehicle to an unmanned drop off location, we received an email claiming there was damage on the vehicle. We will fully dispute this claim through all legal avenues. It is deeply disappointing that Avis representatives would seek to fraudulently abuse foreign tourists in this way.

Found the check in confusing due to the reprasentative talking in circles and lying about my insurance and talking me into buying a second insurance. Also the fact that i brought the car back a week early and have not recieved a refund or and email from the customer service that i sent the info to. Will probably pick another car rental service the next time in hopes they will be easier to deal with.

When I arrived at Belfast Aldergrove.. Hertz Which I usually book direct ..but made a mistake using KAYAK I spoke to Michael and advised me to ring the company as they had not insured the car …he was very apologetic…but there was nothing he could do ….he gave me a local number to ring …but I couldn’t speak to anyone . I just went outside and got a taxi which cost me £28 to get to my elderly mothers house ….don’t use KAYAK …speak to Hertz directly …they are a fantastic company …but because I used a 3rd party to book with them …there was nothing they could do. I will in future book with Michael direct as I always get 100% …I just made the mistake going cheaper through KAYAK.
