Top tips for hiring a car in Samoa

  • With the freedom of having a rental car in Samoa, you should drive to Lalomanu Beach to the east of Upolu Island, and then drive 15.4 km (9.6 mi) to the To Sua Trench swimming hole on the south side of the island. On Savai'i, you can take your car off-road and visit the Saleaula lava fields, home of Mount Matavanu, which is a 10.1 km (6.3 mi) drive away from the nearest town of Safotu on the north side of the island.
  • Renting a car in Samoa is a comfortable way to get around, as the local buses are notoriously uncomfortable and are usually packed. Besides this, public transportation is unreliable, so your most sensible mode of transport is a car. Although an ordinary compact or saloon car will allow you to reach almost all Samoan tourist attractions, you will often come across gravel and dirt tracks, which can be harder to navigate. If you intend to travel on these roads, you should consider renting a four-wheel drive.
  • Although Samoa does not have any laws about child car seats, it is advised to either bring one with you on your flight or rent one from your rental car company. You can rent a car seat or booster seat for children for around 10 WST (4 USD) a day.
  • Samoa is made up of two islands, Savai'i and Upolu, and you likely will want to visit both. If you check with your car hire agency, they should be able to arrange for you to take your rental car across to the neighboring island. You are normally allowed to take rental cars from Upolu over to Savai’i and back, but cars rented on Savai’i cannot be taken to Upolu. The ferry costs for vehicles is between 80 and 110 WST (30-41 USD) each way, depending on the size of your car.
  • Small rental cars in Samoa are around 48% cheaper than other car types, on average
