The legal driving age in Chennai is 18 years old but the major car hire companies require that you be at least 21 and have held a licence for 12 months or more. There are sometimes local agencies that'll let you hire a car if you're under 21 but they'll be costly. If you're under 25, you may be limited to compact or mini models and be liable for an additional surcharge. You must have a valid form of ID and a credit card with your name on it. If you have booked and paid online with another card, make sure you have the same card with you and that the card owner is present.
There are no car hire desks or companies operating directly out of Chennai International Airport. All companies providing services from the airport rely on online bookings. You'll book your car hire through KAYAK and arrange the meeting time based on your flight details with the company directly. Once you've landed and made your way through the luggage claim section, a company employee will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it. The employee will escort you to the car, where you will do an inspection and be given the keys.
Since there are no dedicated centres at the airport, there are no car hire facilities available, but you will have access to all of the airport amenities for everything you need. Chennai International Airport is home to a variety of restaurants and eateries to get something to eat. There are also toilets and baby-changing facilities, as well as ATMs and currency exchange offices.
Car rental companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Chennai airport to off-airport locations include Avis, Eco Rent, Instant Cabs, Myles, and SS Travels.
