A compact economy car is ideally suited to the narrow city roads and trips to and from the beach. If you’re travelling further afield, you may want to consider a larger saloon for additional comfort on longer trips. In remote areas and national parks, terrain can be rough and a 4x4 is perfect if you’re planning on being adventurous.

In the city centre, the speed limit is normally a maximum of 50km/h (around 30mph). Outer roads tend to be between 90-100km/h (56-62mph) and on dual carriageways and motorways, a limit of 120km/h (75mph) applies. Mobile speed checks are common in the area and watch out for cameras on the N-332.

Finding a spot to park your car hire in Torrevieja can be somewhat of a challenge in the height of the season. There are car parks close to the beach, like the lot at the end of Calle Bonn, although you’ll be lucky to grab a space. The car parks near the Marina are a good option and provide easier access than on-street parking in the centre. Prices are usually between €1.70 (£1.47) and €2.10 (£1.82) per hour and it’s a 15min walk to the beach.
