Nick on windshield
Cons: An hour after we got the car, I noticed snuck on the glass of the windshield. I didn't want to notify Hertz because surely they would blame us. We hoped they wouldn't notice upon return. Well, they did, and of course didn't believe we didn't do it. We have CDW from our credit card company, but going home, so have to pay up front of new windshield and do time consuming claim with Chase Bank. Big nuisance, and not our fault. Our downfall was not thoroughly inspecting the windshield at time of rental.

Easy rental
Pros: Quick and efficient, and great communication between the office and rental location which was not directly connected to the office. Got a Fiat which was 1 level up from mini? Also was directed that we needed the minimum Israeli insurance of $12 I'm addition to the per day rate.
Cons: Nothing was bad, just the usual car rental.

Pros: Got a cute car although it was in mechanically bad shape. Fairly inexpensive. Doing the original paperwork to rent the car was good.
Cons: Returning the car in Jerusalem the service was truly terrible. Rude and slow which is the worst possible combo. Car had a bad transmission. Pretty dinged up but that was ok.

Pros: The staff was overworked and not pleasant or helpful. They were not honest. It took more than two and a half hours to rent. The car was old and dirty
Cons: Do not rent or do business with this company. They are not honest and have very old equipment in very poor shape. They rent cars when they have insufficient inventory. The GPS unit only spoke Spanish, which I do not ! Other customers had similar or worse experiences.

Pros: Unhelpful staff, disorganized and rude.
Cons: Car wasnt ready, rental process was too long and tedious, couldnt rent for 24 hrs as normal, because office was closed next day for elections. Understand that is a holiday, but they need to make accommodations and plan ahead for this instead of telling customers they need to return the car in 5 hrs.

Rude service, car is the worst I've rented in more
Pros: That they finally gave me the car
Cons: Car was not at the requested pick-up location. After an 45 min of wait I was driven to a different location on the other end of town. I was given a car that was 5-7 years old. It was not clean, it was scarched in every place, and even one part was missing on the bumper. It had only one head light working. Transmission was overheating during my trip. But since no other car was available, I had to take it.

The refused to honor the reservattion properly
Pros: Nothing
Cons: An going to file a complaint with BBB separately as I had a certain number of bags that I needed to fit. They insisted on giving me a smaller car (which I ended up picking with seat down to fit the luggage) while saying it's the same car class and it's the agency problem that they didn't give them correct information.

Cons: Could not reach the Avis Call Center to modify my reservation and change the return location. Avis locations are not up to date on the internet. Poor Service All Around
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Showed up at time listed on reservation. After I signed for car I was directed to sit and wait the car. During the time I was sitting an obvious local Jewish patron showed up and signed for his car. He did not have to wait as his car showed up almost immediately, was clean and brought to the street in front of the office. I was ultimately directed to pick up the car that was ready for me in the garage. Went down to the garage to get the car and it just begun to clean it. Even after cleaning the car was quite dirty. Additionally, there were scratches and dings all over it that were not visible in a dark garage. Not a good experience. Returning the car was a similar experience; rude workers at Ben Gurion airport. Shuttle driver made no attempt to help load our eight bags onto the shuttle as we were traveling with the family, including my 78-year-old mother-in-law

Top tips for renting a car in Jerusalem

  • A hire car is the best and most comfortable way to freely explore not only Jerusalem, but also other major destinations in Israel, as tours can get quite pricey. A car is especially useful if you want to drive along the western Mediterranean coast and make scenic stops as you please. Drive to the fortress of Masada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as to the Dead Sea, which will take you less than two hours to reach from Jerusalem.
  • Most of the major car hire companies, including Avis and Sixt, can be found at Ben Gurion Airport (TLV), which is located about 50 minutes from Jerusalem. All the car hire desks can be found on the first floor of the Arrivals Hall at the airport’s main terminal. It is recommended that you get an International Driver’s Permit alongside your domestic driver’s license. Make sure to request an English-speaking GPS.
  • Driving in downtown Jerusalem can be quite challenging due to the narrow, busy streets, so if you’re not comfortable, just park your car somewhere and explore the center by foot. Only residents can drive in the Old City. Driving on the outskirts of the city is far easier, and most of Israel’s highway signs are expressed in Hebrew, Arabic, and English. If you any need help, remember that most Israelis speak good English.
  • Avoid driving during rush hour, which is 7-10 a.m. and 3:30-6:30 p.m. Fridays experience less traffic as most official establishments are closed. Route 1 is the main road heading towards the Mediterranean coast, with Tel Aviv to the west and the Dead Sea to the east, and it tends to be pretty crowded during peak season and on weekends. When heading to east Jerusalem, take Route 443 instead, which is less congested.
  • Book your rental car in Jerusalem at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
