Identify the different systems by green signs as motorways, blue as the dual carriageways, with blue also for local roads.  Parking zones are also conveniently colour-coded with white as free zones, blue as paid, with yellow markings reserved for residents only.  Be aware that some cities restrict non-resident vehicles in busy tourist areas so a vehicle may need to be registered to use them. Drivers should drive on the right-hand side of the road. Remain alert to the numerous mopeds which are constant features on Italian roads.  Roads in Italy can seem more aggressive than what you are normally used to, but in general, the conditions are good. It pays to be decisive as well as assertive when behind the wheel.

To hire rental vehicles in Italy, 18 years of age is the minimum age requirement.  Drivers under the age of 25 may encounter surcharges when hiring vehicles. Possible restrictions on the categories may also be limited as to what can be hired. Only full valid licences are permitted. Make sure an International Permit has been acquired to comply with EU regulations. Another form of ID such as a passport is advisable. You will also need a credit card to complete the booking.
