Renting a car and driving in Las Vegas
It’s a great way to see the Strip and beyond, with a little planning
If it’s your first time traveling to Las Vegas, if you look out your airplane window at the Las Vegas Strip, you might be stunned at how small it is - at least in comparison with all the mountains and desert around it. You can drive to the nation’s first and largest National Recreation Area, Lake Mead, in under an hour. The first National Park Service monument dedicated to Ice Age fossil preservation, Tule Springs, is just 30 minutes north of the resorts.

You can drive to the nation’s first and largest National Recreation Area, Lake Mead, in under an hour. The first National Park Service monument dedicated to Ice Age fossil preservation, Tule Springs, is just 30 minutes north of the resorts.
Red Rock and Valley of Fire are both easy drives, too, and more and more people are visiting Las Vegas for outdoor sports. You can get to many of these places on organized tours that will pick you up right at your hotel. But if you want to keep your own schedule, and even see multiple places in a day, you’ll want to rent a car.

Drivers from the US, US territories and Canada need a valid driver’s license and a credit card to rent in Las Vegas. The license needs to be valid for the whole period of your rental and can’t be a digital license. International visitors coming from non-English-speaking countries whose languages are written in the Latin alphabet (like Spanish, German, and Italian) should carry an International Driver’s Permit along with their license. Travelers whose licenses are printed in a non-Latin-based alphabet must carry an IDP for translation along with their license. But it’s important to note that car companies won’t rent to you with only an IDP, since it’s not a substitute.

Rental prices have historically been relatively low in Vegas since the market for rentals is huge and competitive. All the major rental companies are here, as well as smaller regional players. Typically, SUVs are popular, so expect to pay a premium, if you can find them. If you want to get behind the wheel of your dream car, Las Vegas is your city. Multiple car rental agencies rent exotic cars like McLarens, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis in town, and you can even rent a Rolls Royce Cullinan (the SUV version of the Phantom). Many will drop off your ride at your hotel; some national agencies rent exotics right from the airport; and some will rent to you for as few as four hours—just long enough to impress a date.

If you’re budget-minded, choosing where to rent a car in Las Vegas may require a little math. On the one hand, there’s a huge, dedicated car rental building just a couple of miles from the airport served by free shuttles and it’s open 24/7. Its rates are often lower than anything you can rent from your hotel. Here’s the catch: You’ll pay airport-specific fees like a concession recovery fee and customer facility charge, and that’s on top of the 10% state government surcharge, sales tax for car rentals of over 8%, an additional 2% Clark County rental tax and a flat $4 per day consumer facility charge. You can get out of the state government charge and facility charge by going off-property – but your daily rates might be higher. The fees and surcharges in casinos can be even higher, without the competitive airport rates.

Most rental car companies don’t restrict driving across state lines, and some will impose a one-way fee if you’re dropping off in another state. Still, check car companies’ policies on rentals. For instance, some companies have territorial restrictions and allow you to take the car only to Arizona, California, and Utah.

You should always carry ample insurance, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to buy it from car rental agencies. Rental car companies do provide minimum required liability coverage of $25,000 in bodily injury and $20,000 in property damage coverage. But if you already carry a car insurance policy with collision or comprehensive coverage (which pays to replace or repair your rental car) or higher liability than Nevada’s minimum, that will cover you in a rental car. You might also already have coverage through the credit card you used to book the car, health insurance, travel insurance, a personal injury policy, home insurance or an umbrella policy.
It pays to look at your own coverage before you get to the rental counter. Rental agencies sell collision or loss damage waivers, which can be a good idea if you don’t have a credit card with rental car coverage, or even if you have it through your car insurance but don’t want your premium to rise if you’ve caused an accident. Like the majority of states, Nevada is a fault state, which means the at-fault driver picks up the tab.

Hotel casinos have toyed with charging for parking over the years, adding it and then taking away charges when guests complained. Unlike the good old days when even valet parking was free, most hotels now charge for it – some up to $40. Some hotels provide free parking for loyal guests with a player card. In other words, it’s a mixed bag and charges seem to change on a dime. It’s best to check with your hotel directly before you arrive. Off the Strip, parking is plentiful and generally free.

Nevada and all the states near and touching the West Coast have some of the highest fuel prices in the country, and there’s no remedy for that except renting a fuel-efficient, smaller car. However, as in most tourist-heavy cities, you’re likely to find the lowest prices away from the resort corridor and in residential neighborhoods. You can save on gas if you’re a member of big box stores like Costco and Sam’s Club, which discount their fuel for cardholders.

The rental car industry, like the hotel industry, uses dynamic rental pricing; in other words, on holidays, during a huge convention or trade show, or other event, prices will almost inevitably skyrocket. So, just like for hotels, you might want to look at the city’s convention calendar while you’re planning your trip, especially if your dates are flexible.

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Las Vegas
Outside of the airport is cheaper and more convenient.
RickFeb 2026
Expect to deal with many travelers who require extra time to process ID and documents. I understand all rentals are picked up at a central location miles for airport terminal. Need transport to this center. Some companies are located at remote sites from this location, so need to take another shuttle to get there. All in all, spent about 90 minutes from baggage claim to driving away with vehicle. Was not assigned vehicle that reserved. Was an old car with 57,000 miles on it.
Verified travelerJan 2026
Call to make sure the car you booked is there. Record your conversations and write down the names of the people you speak to, in case you need to dispute anything the rental car company alleges.
ThaddeusNov 2025
Give yourself some time to get to and from the rental car hub and the airport. It was further than I realized and took a solid 20 minute ride on the shuttle to reach.
Verified travelerSept 2025
Double shuttle adds time. Especially in returning the car. Service people try to upsell which I suppose is their job. Spouses are added free if they show their id.
AudreyOct 2025
Check to be sure when rental place closes when booking car on strip. They will not accommodate you for any delays
yolandaNov 2025
Bring your auto insurance policy to avoid the ridiculous per day fees.
NateJun 2025
If you are visiting Vegas from out of state, you will get better rates and conditions than locals do. Locals get hit with higher deposits and mileage restrictions at many of the lower priced companies.
RogerAug 2025
Be flexible it could take a while with the crowd on weekends and during concert season .

To get to Easirent location, 2 buses are required ... one from the passenger terminal to the Airport Rental Center, and a second from the Rental Center to the Easirent location.
MichelleApr 2025
Don’t use a third party to book. Use the at rental agency directly
JehniApr 2025
make sure you get there right on time or they will not honor your rate. bait and switch very much in operation
Verified travelerJan 2025
Fox is a double offsite transfer from the airport. Plan accordingly. Car is assigned, you pick from a section. Go over your rental with a fine toothed comb so you don’t get dinged on the dings. Staff is friendly and helpful, but there’s lots of upsell pressure.
Verified travelerJan 2025
Use a company based in the "onsite" rental area. The shuttle is infrequent slow but you can be sure of quality.
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Make sure you bring all documents and if free cancellation available book multiple companies to avoid staying without a car
DFeb 2025
Reserve very early and be prepared for adverse situations.
NickDec 2024
Make sure you return the car to the correct parking garage. They all look the same and they charge you an outrageous $25. So if you drive into the wrong garage like I did, you will be charged $25.
Verified travelerNov 2024
I used my own full coverage insurance from Geico and the employee accepted my declaration page/proof of insurance that I showed her in my Geico app. This saved me probably another $70 if I would have been required to use Advantage’s in-house insurance.
Verified travelerNov 2024
Stick with the major car rental companies so you don’t have to take multiple shuttle buses and waste a bunch of your time. You’ll be treated much better.
Verified travelerSept 2024
Go with an off site rental company. You will save so much money! Best deals around and much cheaper and more convenient than taking an Uber/Lyft.
AndreaOct 2024
The rental companies are well represented in Vegas, and the rental desks as well as the vehicles are at the airport. No shuttles required.
Verified travelerOct 2024
We flew into Vegas to drive to Sedona. Good mileage on the car, but wish we would have upgraded to a full size car for the added comfort in a longer drive.
Verified travelerSept 2024
I would recommend going with a larger company. These small ones seem to have additional fees not included with a larger company.
Verified travelerJun 2024
Do your homework. They have rules if your a local versus if your from out of town; which may result in you paying more money if your not returning home the day your returning the vehicle.
Verified travelerAug 2024
You have to take two shuttles to get to their location about 15 minutes away from the airport. There shuttle only comes by every 30-40 minutes.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Use your own insurance, return with a full tank. Have car insurance docs downloaded on your phone & readily available.

Verified travelerJun 2024
Make sure everything is in order before leaving lot
Verified travelerJun 2024
Do not get persuaded that car rental companies in Las Vegas do not accept international / out of state insurance and liability insurance. These companies have a new tactic to scam you by telling you that this is their policy and is unchanged. Then you are forced to pay however much amount they set because you already took the shuttle to their counter. YOU CAN TAKE THE SHUTTLE BACK TO MCCARRAN CAR RENTAL CENTER and find a more honest rental company by being quoted in person. That is what we did and Sixt saved our trip.
Verified travelerApr 2024
I'm seeing an increase in charging stations, an electric vehicle would be sweet.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Make sure you use a physical credit card. If time/convenience is a factor take into consideration that all of the rentals are off site. Fox is worse since you need two shuttles to get there. Again, not a huge issue but it might be an inconvenience for a large group or family.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Book early and expect delays especially during busy travel times - most car rental places were running out of vehicles.

Verified travelerMar 2024
Make sure your pick up and drop off is what you need- I needed an airport pick up and drop off- not sure how this rental ended up at a hotel, in which I was not staying…..cost me over $100 in Uber fees to get there and back.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Do not rent from any location other than airport. And check the tires as they conveniently omit doing that check with you.
ChristinaJan 2024
Driving in Vegas was pretty easy to get around. Pro tip , there is free parking at treasure Island, and then you can take the monorail to check out the rest of the hotels on the strip.

I got on one highway to go downtown from vibesdiystudio that had me on the wrong side of the street, with cars going the opposite direction on the wrong side than I'm use to. It was clear on how to enter, there was concrete barricades for safety, but mentally weird. Maybe one because I'm not use to it
Verified travelerJan 2024
Check that you don’t get stuck with a hidden drop off charge if you’re returning the car in a different location With a pick up at a hotel on The Strip ensure you find out where the car rental company counter is ahead of time
ShakehJan 2024
Freeways are a little tricky and get super busy at night. I would recommend driving within the speed limit to avoid any sudden maneuvers. Otherwise the streets are wide but also follow speed limit to avoid getting ticketed.
AndrewJan 2024
Please research parking rules and fees. Though most hotels and parking lots now charge in the strip, there are still a few that don’t charge for parking (for example, I used TI when visiting the Venetian and Caesars).
JosephJan 2024
Allocate more time for ACE. When you take the shuttle to the car rental companies, you will need to take another one as ACE is off-site.

SergioSept 2023
Weigh closely both cost and convenience of rental car versus Uber/taxi. If staying on the strip, it may not be worth a rental car.

You will need to take a second shuttle to certain car rental companies to get your car so be prepared for that if you’re arriving later in the evening. I also think that the little reflective tabs on the road are not quite as nice as painted stripes so it may take a bit to get use to them. If you are in a rush to get to a show don’t drive the strip in the evening 👍🏼
ChrisJun 2023
Lots of traffic right now because of the Formula 1 construction. Use Waze or a Google Maps to avoid huge delays around the Strip.

Traffic is very busy in Vegas, avoid 95 and 15 when possible, use surface streets. Everyone drives 10+ over the speed limit and runs red lights. Use caution and defensive driving.

Drivers on the roads are definitely more friendly than in Miami and there's much less traffic. Airport traffic is much faster than everywhere else in the city, so familiarize yourself with your trip ahead of time. The car has to be returned tonthe northernmost entrance of the rent-a-car center.

Be careful of other drivers, especially when changing lanes. But renting a car is the best way to get around town.

Las Vegas drivers are a bit more aggressive than I’m used to, but overall I didn’t have an issue. I would have rather ride share or walked. Only rent a car if you need to (we visited the Hoover Dam!)

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Las Vegas
Having a car available is of key importance if you plan on enjoying all that Las VePetrol has to offer, particularly if you are not staying at one of the hotels on the Strip. Public transport is quite limited, so, if you plan on exploring the town, driving is your best option.
Planning on renting a vehicle during your time in Las Vegas? If your flight lands at McCarran International Airport, you can reach the McCarran Rent-A-Car Center by hopping onto one of the 24/7 shuttles that ferry passengers from both Terminals 1 and 3 to the hire center.
No visit to Las VePetrol is complete without a trip to the Strip. However, drivers should be aware that distractions line the Strip and it is quite easy to let your attention stray. Because of this, it is advised that drivers make sure to keep their eyes on the road, especially because the drivers ahead of you may themselves become distracted and drive erratically.
Rush hour traffic is no laughing matter in Las Vegas. Congestion can become quite severe during the morning rush (from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.) and in the afternoon from (4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On the weekend after 4:00 p.m. there is also a separate tourist rush that fills the streets back up again. For the standard work week traffic, I-15 and US 95 are to be avoided if at all possible, as they are two of the worst hit highways during rush hour.

Great experience. I would definitely rent from Enterprise again.
Made a 5pm reservation. Office was closed at 5pm. Sixt refused to refund me at first, then tried to subject me to a $200 cancelation fee because of their mistake, which was almost the entire rental price. They refused to put a manager on the phone after the customer service agent said that was my only option. What a joke, never going back. Had to fight for an hour to get my refund, and was still out over $100 just in Uber fees to pick up the vehicle in the first place.

I would recommend a much clearer description of where the car is picked up and dropped off. In Vegas the rental car desk and vehicles were parked at the airport which is what I thought. However, Sixt is NOT on site in Salt Lake. That was a big issue and was not clear when I booked. I might have chose a different rental company if I’d known this. Also, since we were renting for 6 weeks this added extra taxes and a two invoice system that was not invoiced properly. Basically, the car was great but the admin side was not. Trying to speak to someone live on the phone to correct the incorrect invoicing was frustrating and took hours. There was an employee in Salt Lake I wanted to mention (The Austin) who went out of his way to help us. He explained the two invoice system, apologized for the confusion since we had driven all the way to the airport to be told it was offsite. He then drove us to our airport hotel since we didn’t have a way to get there. We dropped off the car the day before our flight and were planning to use the hotel shuttle to get us back/forth to the hotel. The Sixt drop off is down the interstate from the airport so it was an issue.
They didn't have the car that I rent and provide me a electric one instead on the hybrid, therefore I was not able to make my trip there was not enough electrical chargers on my route so sad

Car rental was a bait and switch. Get to the counter and find out that somewhere in the fine print we had selected an electric vehicle. It was $20/day extra to get a gas vehicle. We had selected a Toyota Corolla or equivalent which is what we ended up with for more money. Don't remember ever seeing an all electric Toyota Corolla. Very deceptive.

We rented in Las Vegas and they are off site...as in a shuttle to a another shuttle. It looked sketchy. Like what were we getting into. Mainly the problem was NV has a new law as of Oct 2025 requiring a certain amount of liability insurance. Fine, but who brings their auto insurance card with them on vacation? We didn't plan on renting a car and at no point do any of the apps warn or tell you, that you may want to bring your car insurance information with you or up your amounts prior if renting in NV. They wanted to charge $50 a day on top of my rental rate. The guy next to me had his state minimums and they were not high enough so he had to pay the $50 and he wasn't prepared for that. These companies need to do better to warn us but they won't. Just a big money grab in a state that already nickel and dimes you to death. Also the line and process were sooo long and slow. One of the CS reps was so chatty and actually pulled out his phone to talk about his hike to red rocks. Like SIR, there at 15 people in line here. Also why am I paying $65 for the extra insurance coverage when I made the reservation, then you want to charge me more? Why are you asking me tons of questions when I answered those on the app. Like what is that information for if you are going to ask me again in person and no I don't want to pay more for an upgrade. When you leave you get hounded by the show sales people. The walk around and photos of every inch of the car. Come on take a video, I haven't had that with any other company in years. The return was the easiest and fastest part. Next time I will use a regular name brand rental company. Not their fault about the new law but still an email or test message advising of this prior would have been nice and given me time to contact my insurance company to email me.

This company is very unprofessional. The driver that picked us up from the airport was yelling at the group and being very ignorant to everyone because he did not make more than 20$ in tips. The front counter girl was on the phone with her I am assuming boyfriend while we were trying to re book as she said our booking was canceled because our flight was late. She was very unprofessional, told me to give her my credit card then just over charged me on everything without even asking me or telling me the cost of all these extra costs….. Then gave me a car that was you can tell just returned as it was dirty on the inside and had less then a quarter tank of gas. The car was also left in gear when I entered it. I will be contacting head office over the next few days to try and get some of the money back that they over charged me. Put simple I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE AS IT IS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE ENCOUNTERED! The driver that drove us back to the airport after our trip I will say was professional and treated us very well that is the only good thing I have to say Maybe he should be running this division of this company

Late flight got in at 1am. Had to wait in line for over an hour to check in for the rental car. When we finally got checked in, we had another 30 minute wait while the car was cleaned
Customer service was ok even though she would continually stop to be on her cell phone. The quality of the van was horrible. It was dirty inside and out. Windshield had streaks and a film on the inside that we couldn't see through at times in certain light. Sooooo DIRTY!!! And the gas tank was empty. We told customer service and they said there was a gas station just up the street and that we should be ok. They didn't even come out to verify. Which means they knew the condition of the Van. We had to immediately stop, fill up the tank and clean the van windows and seats and run it through the car wash. The van also smelled of marijuana. DISGUSTING! We have never had this kind of experience with any of our rentals with other companies.

The drop-off process at Fox’s was fast and easy. Suggest signage stating process to park here, remove belongings, and leave keys in unlocked vehicle. Luckily, a shuttle was about to leave, so caught a return ride quickly. Otherwise, they were somewhat slow on running back n forth. Did not like the need to take second remote to rental lot to obtain vehicle. Was not clearly explained in site details. Lobby of registration area was run down. Three agents working the counter, required us to wait longer than anticipated. Due to many foreign travelers, agents spent extra time to process documents. Did not appreciate the amount of taxes and insurance charges to final bill. What is advertised price, well add 120% as close estimate to final bill.

Regarding this it was a deeply disappointing and upsetting experience when collecting my rental vehicle. Upon arrival at the counter, I was pressured into purchasing additional products and coverages that I did not request, agree to, or need. I was told these items were mandatory and that the insurance I already held through Expedia “wasn’t valid” and that I should “contact Expedia” instead. This information was misleading and felt deliberately manipulative. I was also charged for services I did not use, including being made to sign for items such as a bus transfer that I never took, yet was still billed for. The counter agent’s behaviour was unprofessional and unacceptable (sanoe). She was rude, dismissive, and gave me an ultimatum: either pay the added charges and hurry up as she can’t waste her time with me as customer waiting or leave without a vehicle and with no refund. This felt coercive and left me with no genuine choice. This experience not only resulted in unauthorised charges, but also ruined the start of my holiday. I believe I was misled, upsold without consent, and effectively defrauded.
