Take your time if you are from North America, as the driving is on the other hand. But you will get used to it very quickly.

Verified travelerMay 2026

Check out everything about insurance before you pick up the car

Verified travelerDec 2025

Book early and you can pick up from right outside airport.

Verified travelerFeb 2026

Make sure the actual cars and car rental places are at the airport. Otherwise, it is more than confusing.

Verified travelerJul 2025

as long as you have AC, you don't need to rent a fancy car. It's small it's crowded and the parking spaces are small. It's joyful to drive anywhere and see the scenery and have the freedom of your own car.

JTJun 2025

Insurance is ~$100 / day. I don't know if car rental companies have substantial differences in their insurance pricing. Still, seems worth it to get after insurance price when choosing a car rental company. Car had 1 power port. If you want more, bring a cigarette lighter that provides two USB ports. Car had 20,000 miles. Never heard of the brand. With an ignition key. Took about a minute of jiggle to turn the ignition key to star the car. No backup camera. Your expectations of cars may not be met from the developed world.

Ty-RyghtMar 2025

Any car is fine, roads in great condition Your insurance at home or online purchased insurance are not recognized. You have to buy all insurance from them. It gets expensive but not have any insurance would e insanity

Verified travelerApr 2025

Driving on the left side takes some getting used to. Turn signal is on the right!

Verified travelerDec 2024

Everything went very well. Took a little adjusting to driving on opposite side of road. Biggest adjustment was not turning on windshield wipers when I was trying to use the turn signal. Also, speed limit signs are in MPH, not KPH. Signage and advise related to round-abouts at the Dollar/Thrifty office was very helpful.

MikeJan 2025

A smaller car is preferred. Driving on the left side takes a little getting used to. Lots of roundabouts / rotaries but marked very well on lane to be in. Roads were in great condition and marked very well.

Verified travelerDec 2024

You drive on the left side of the road so be mindful

Verified travelerOct 2024

We rented a small hatch back Picanto. Easy on fuel, drove all over the island multiple times still had a quarter tank left and only needed just over 5 gallons to fill. Driving was instant immersion from the airport office. If you have not driven on the left side before it would be quite daunting but since I had done so for years in the past, it was a good shock back to the left side. Round abouts and give ways are challenging to the tourists especially when busy. All in all easy to get around on the island. So you definitely need to be cautious if you are new to the left side driving.

Verified travelerNov 2024

As a U.S. based insurance professional, I recommend the purchase of the Collision/Damage waiver AND the third party LIABILITY insurance! Relatively cheap for the coverage provided. Your U.S. policy will NOT cover you in Cayman, and your credit card coverage will be VERY limited, secondary/excess and completely inadequate if something goes wrong.

MatthewApr 2024

Would recommend car has Android Auto / Apply CarPlay compatibility depending on how much driving you will be doing.

BrendanJan 2024

For driving on the opposite side be patient. Island drivers are very nice

Verified travelerDec 2023

Drive on the left and take a moment to learn the roundabouts.

Verified travelerNov 2023

Drive slowly and if you need to let others pass, pull to the left so they can pass easily. Most people are patient and kind

Verified travelerAug 2023

Avoid the morning & evening work traffic. Be courteous to those trying to turn in or out as they will surely return the favor. Watch for pooling water on the roads when it’s raining and slow down! Pay attention to the roundabout lane signs and you’ll do just fine!

Verified travelerJul 2023

Be diligent with your rental car company. Easy to drive just need to remember everything is opposite. Just need to be cautious.

Verified travelerJul 2023

Driving on the left hand side is a lot to get used to!

Driving car rentals in George Town is a terrific way to see this capital city on Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. In George Town car rentals, you can go where you want to go when you want to go without having to rely on public transportation. In car rentals in George Town, you can explore local attractions such as the Ft. George Ruins, Hero Square, and Cayman Islands National Museum, not to mention all the breathtaking beaches. In George Town car rentals, you can explore the entire island of Grand Cayman, from Barker's National Park on the northwestern tip, to Starfish Beach on the north central point, and finally to the Blowholes coastal rocks with water spray on the southeastern end of the island.
Situated in north central part of the city, the Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) is an ideal location for picking up car rentals in George Town. All the car rental agencies at GCM are located across Roberts Drive from the terminal building. When you deplane and you exit at Arrivals, turn left and walk briefly until you cross Roberts Drive. Once you cross, you'll be at the building and parking lot where all of the car rental agencies and vehicles are housed. This is also where you will return your rental car.
For those driving car rentals in George Town, you'll be driving on the left side of the road. You must wear your seat belt at all times, and this includes passengers in the front as well as the back seat. You are allowed to turn left at a red light, but only after you have made a full stop. If you want to use your mobile phone while you're driving, it must be hands-free. Pedestrians always have the right of way. Also, George Town experiences congested traffic during peak rush hours from 7:30 am to 9:30 am and then from 4 pm to 6 pm on weekdays.
Those driving car rentals in George Town and on Grand Cayman will encounter roundabouts that can be challenging to drive in. Unfortunately, driving in roundabouts is the number one cause of traffic accidents on Grand Cayman. Always use your turn signals, drive carefully, use your mirrors, and look behind you as well to make sure you do not change lanes when there is no space to do so. If you do not feel comfortable driving in a roundabout, consider adding on a GPS navigation device that can help you find a route that avoids roundabouts.

Reserved a full size. Gave me a hatchback. 75% of the times I turned the key in the ignition to start the car, it took repeated random effort of wheel turning and key turning to turn the key in the ignition and start the car. Took more than a minute sometimes. I assumed it was going to strand me. Left voicemail at the phone number on my contract. No response for two days.

We booked a compact and they gave us an economy without compensation. A blonde female employee remarked our luggage was not going to fit in the economy car and tried to upsell us to a van. Of course, it would have fit in the card we reserved months ahead of he trip. They didn’t have luggage carts at drop off and the blonde female employee didn’t help, just said it was too bad. There is no effort to help customers. They have no maps. It was an unpleasant interaction all around.

The agent at pick up used shady language to try to make us think that the insurance we had bought online with kayak at the time of bookingwas not real and that we had been ripped off and that we really should only buy it from budget. She made it seem as if we did not have the insurance at all. She was snarky, bordering on rude. Another agent came along and in plain language just said they wouldn't have record of it there at the counter if we did buy insurance through the third-party, in this case kayak. That is a whole lot different than we didn't have insurance even though we paid for it and we were ripped off. I was very unhappy with her. Shadier and shadier every time we go to rent a car anymore.

Pickup and drop off can be a bit chaotic, but on Saturdays especially there are a lot of cars being turned around in a short period of time. Best to get your mind into “island time” before entering the rental building. We got a flat tire during our rental and team took care of it with no complaints and dropped off a new rental car to our condo - great service.

Excellent experience and a great way to start and end your trip with friendly, helpful people. Easy going, fair, seamless process, and informative it doesn't get much better than that. The car was clean and operated as intended.

They were closed at the time of my rental pick up. Didn’t answer any emergency phone service. I was out there for an hour trying to get help.

Our car was in pretty sketchy condition. The front bumper scraped on everything. The first time we went to unlock it in a parking lot, the key got stuck and we had to wait for them to send out a locksmith. We were told “this happens all the time” and were instructed to just avoid locking it for the rest of our trip. ?! Although the staff was nice and responsive, I’m not satisfied with that resolution.
