Top tips for hiring a car at Rapid City airport

  • Rapid City Airport (RAP) is situated just a short drive from the 44 highway which runs direct to Rapid City. As RAP is a small and fairly remote airport, passengers relying on public transport may face long waits between shuttles. With easy road access to the city, car hire at Rapid City Airport is an ideal option for anyone who wants to get on the move as soon as they land. If you are leaving the airport heading north on the 44, you can also connect with the 16 and then make your way onto Interstate 90. This connects you to nearby rural areas, such as the Black Forest National Park. Perfect, if you’re feeling adventurous.
  • RAP is a small domestic terminal and is generally popular with business travellers. This means that Rapid City Airport is often busy during peak weekday times, such as the morning and afternoon rush hours. To skip queues at the car hire counters, it is a good idea to pick up your vehicle during the day, either in the late morning or early afternoon. Midweek days are also generally quieter than Mondays and Fridays, as this is when many air commuters will need to travel.
  • If you’re looking to rent a car on a budget, Rapid City Airport car hire branches can offer you some great low-cost deals. Car rental branches, such as Alamo and Avis, offer a range of economy vehicles to help you save money when you travel. You can also opt for a low-price model when you book with Budget Car Hire.
  • When it comes to returning your car hire at Rapid City Airport, you should be aware that different rental branches on the premises have various opening times. Familiarise yourself with these when you rent a car so you can return it at a time when the desk is open. Most of the car hire branches are open from the early morning until the late evening, but some close at midnight, while others close shortly before. Most branches at RAP airport are not open overnight.
  • Book your car hire at Rapid City airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Easirent car hire is situated in the north end of the terminal, past the Mount Rushmore Memories Store. There are also some car hire branches located outside the airport. For example, Enterprise is situated just across Terminal Road, outside the main Arrivals exit. Hertz’ pick-up lot is also situated here.

  • Which car hire companies are easy to use at RAP?

1st car was kind of wore inside & it was dirty. We went back inside explained that we weren't satisfied with that car and Matt put us quickly into a different vehicle. It would've been nice to have our vehicle waiting for us closer to the building.

The inside of the front windshield was so dirty that the car was not drivable when facing directly towards the sun. I had to get a cloth and wash the inside before I could drive. This is a severe safety matter.

Initial flight to Denver was delayed causing us to miss our connection to RapidCity. Airline re-routed us to Billings given limited flight options to RapidCity. Spent over an hour on the phone once in Bilings(not counting the time my wife was on the phone while I was in the air) routed through multiple call centers only to be told that they couldn’t help and we’d need to email support. Fed up and stranded, I rented a car from Enterprise. Never again…
