The rules of the road and the road systems in the Netherlands are largely similar to the rest of Europe and the US, which makes driving in the country as a visitor fairly straightforward. Some differing laws to take note of are the restrictions on horn usage (only permitted in dangerous situations) and the requirement to only use low beam headlights after dark.

To rent a car in the Netherlands, you must be at least 19 years of age. However, much like in the United States, most car rental agencies will apply a surcharge to drivers under 25. You can drive on your home country’s driver’s license in the Netherlands, but it is recommended for US nationals to obtain an international driving permit.

The speed limits in urban areas in the Netherlands are 50 km/h (31 mph), the limits outside of urban areas are around 80 km/h (50 mph), the limit on expressways is 100 km/h (62 mph), and the limit on motorways is 130 km/h (81 mph).
